The day auction of Impressionist & Modern Art November 15, 2016 at Sotheby's New York is highlighted by a very good paintings Friesz, van Dongen, Bonnard, Picasso, Pechstein and Matisse.

Lot 145 is a wonderful landscape by Emile Othon Friesz (1879-1949) entitled "Arbes, Automne."  An oil on canvas, it measures 31 7/8 by 25 1/2 inches and was painted in 1906.  It was
The back-cover illustration of the catalogue of the November 3 auction at Sotheby's New York when it had an estimate of $350,000 to $450,000 and sold for $654,400. At this auction it has an estimate of $700,000 to $1,000,000.  It sold for $1,092,500 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.


The auction total was $38,836,125 with 176 of 253 lots selling (69.6 percent).

Matisse 146

Lot 146, "Le Port, Collioure, Les Filets qui sechent," by Henri Matisse, watercolor on paper laid down on card, 8 1/4 by 10 3/4 inches, 1905

Lot 146 is a very fine watercolor sketch on paper mounted on a card of "Le Port, Les Filets qui sechent" by Henri Matisse (1869-1954).  It measures 8 1/4 by 10 3/4 inches and was painted in 1905.  It has an estimate of $180,000 to $250,000.  It failed to sell.

Van Dongen

Lot 113, "Au casino de Deauville," by Kees Van Dongen, oil on canvas, 13 by 21 3/4 inches, circa 1925

Lot 113 is a bright casino scene at Deauville by Kees Van Dongen (1877-1968) that is an oil on canvas that measures 13 by 21 3/4 inches.  It was painted circa 1925.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.  It failed to sell.


Bonnard

Vuillard 137

Lot 137, "Reunion electorale," by Edouard Vuillard, oil on board laid down on cradled panel, 14 1/2 by 18 inches, 1893

Lot 137 is a oil on board laid down on cradled panel by Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940) that is entitled "Reunion electorale."  It measures 14 1/2 by 18 inches and was painted in 1893.  It has an estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.  It sold for $106,500.


Foujita


Lot 191, "Les Voubilis," by Tsuguharu Foujita, gouache, brush and ink and gold leaf on paper, 11 1/8 by 7 5/8 inches, 1922

One of the most beautiful works in the auction is Lot 191, a gouache, brush and ink and gold leaf on paper by Tsuguharu Foujita (1886-1968) that is entitled "Les Voubilis."  It measures 11 1/8 by 7 5/8 inches and was created in 1922.  It has an estimate of $70,000 to $90,000.  It sold for $300,000.

Man ray

Lot 361, "Ramapo Hills," by Man Ray, oil on canvas, 20 1/8 by 19 inches, 1914

Lot 361 is a strong landscape oil on canvas by Man Ray (1890-1976) entitled "Ramapo Hills."  It measures 20 1/8 by 19 inches and was painted in 1914. It has been widely reproduced.  It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It failed to sell.

Marc

Lot 226, "Untitled," by Robert Marc, oil on canvas, 18 by 25 1/2 inches

Lot 226 is a strong abstraction by Robert Marc (1943-1993) that is an oil on canvas that measures 18 by 25 1/2 inches.  It has an estimate of $6,000 to $8,000.  It sold for $9,375.

Picasso158

Picasso paper

Lot 185, "Tete de femme," by Pablo Picasso, pencil on a paper cut-out, 18 by 12 1/8 inches, 1961

Lot 185 is a very fine head of a woman in pencil on a paper cut-out by Picasso.  It measures 18 by 12 1/8 inches and was executed in 1961.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It failed to sell.


Nagy 343

Lot 343 is a very beautiful work by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (895-1946) entitled "Space Modulator."  It is a colored crayon, watercolor and pencil on scraped paper mounted on foil laid down on paper and it measures 10 1/4 by 8 inches.  It was created in 1945 and was given by the artist to Solomon R. Guggenheim.  It has an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.  It failed to sell.

Duchamp

Lot 350, "Nu descendant un escalier No. 2," by Marcel Duchamp, pochoir-colored reproduction and stamp on paper, 13 7/8 by 7 1/8 inches, 1937

Lot 350 is a pochoir-colored reproduction and stamp on paper of the very famous image of a Nude descending a staircase by Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968).  It measures 13 7/8 by 7 1/8 inches and was made in 1937.  The original image was created in 1912.  In 1937 the artist planned to reproduce five of his works in an edition of 250 but eventually only two works were chosen and the number of reproductions not recorded.  This lot has an estimate of $90,000 to $120,000.  It sold for $100,000.

Miro 344

Lot 344, "Tete de femme," by Joan Miro, oil on burlap, 24 by 18 1/8 inches, 1939

Lot 344 is an oil on burlap by Joan Miro (1893-1983) that is entitled "Tete de Femme."  It measures 24 by 18 inches and was painted in 1939.  It has an estimate of $1,000,000 to $1,500,000.  It was passed.

Signac 387
