O'Keeffe

This auction of American Paintings May 20, 2015 at Sotheby's New York is highlighted by a good flower painting by Georgia O'Keefe, a wonderful Venetian watercolor by John Singer Sargent, a very lovely Hudson River School landscape by George Inness, an excellent landscape by Asher B. Durand, a superb letter rack painting by Peto, a good Grand Canyon scene by Thomas Moran, a stunning sculpture of peacocks by Gaston Lachaise, rare works by Albert Pinkham Ryder and Ralph Albert Blakelock, and very good paintings by William Merritt Chase and Martin Johnson Heade and a brilliant watercolor by George Luks.

It is one of the few recent such auctions to have a fine group of 19th Century landscapes and not be dominated by the much less interesting and artistic illustrators' works of the 20th Century.

The cover lot, number 11, "White Calla Lily," is an oil on canvas that Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) painted in 1927 and kept in her possession until her death.  It has an estimate of $8,000,000 to $12,000,000.  It sold for $8,986,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The sale total was $38,301,624 with 76 of the 89 offered lots selling.

Sargent

Lot 68, "The Giudecca (A Summer Day on the Giudecca, Venice)," by John Singer Sargent, watercolor on paper, 33 3/4 by 19 1/4 inches, circa 1907

A far better picture is Lot 68, "The Giudecca (A Summer Day on the Giudecca, Venice), a watercolor on paper by John singer Sargent (1856-1925).  It measures 33 3/4 by 19 1/4 inches and was painted circa 1907.  It has an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.  It sold for $670,000.


Chase rowboat

Lot 80, "Pulling for Shore," by William Merritt Chase," oil on panel, 17 3/4 by 30 inches, circa 1886

Lot 80 is an excellent oil on panel by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) entitled "Pulling for Shore."  It measures 17 3/4 by 30 inches and was painted circa 1886.  It was once owned by Seward Webb, R. Rockefeller and the Collection of Time Warner Inc.

A well-known Chase expert has claimed that Chase always signed his work with a very "straight" signature, but as the above photograph indicates he was plainly wrong and Chase was not always perfectly straight when it came to signing.  The lot has an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.  It sold for $225,000.

Chase Shinnecock

Lot 31, "The Blown Thistle, Long Island," by William Merritt Chase, oil on panel, 12 by 18 inches, 1902

A pleasant Long Island scene by Chase entitled "The Blown Thistle" is an oil on panel that measures 12 by 18 inches.  It was painted in 1902.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It sold for $790,000.


Inness

Lot 10, "Landscape (Summer Landscape)," by George Inness, oil on canvas, 16 3/8 by 24 1/8 inches, circa 1876-7

Lot 10 is a very beautiful summer landscape by George Inness (1825-1894).  An oil on canvas, it measures 16 3/8 by 24 1/8 inches and was painted circa 1876-7.  It was included in the major Inness exhibition in 1985-7 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art,the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Art Institute of Chicago.  It has a very modest estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.  It sold for $322,000.


Heade

Lot 26, "Two Fishermen in the Marsh, at Sunset (New Jersey Marshes)," by Martin Johnson Heade, oil on canvas, 15 1/4 by 30 1/8 inches, circa 1876-1882

Lot 26 is a classic marsh landscape by Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) entitled "Two Fisherman in the Marsh, at Sunset (New Jersey Marshes)."  An oil on canvas, it measures 15 1./4 bny 30 1/8 inches and was painted circa 1872-1882.  It was once in the collection of Theodore E. Stebbins Jr., the author of a major book on the artist.

 It has an estimate of $700,000 to $900,000.  It sold for $970,000.


Durand

Lot 86, "A Showery Day Among the Mountains," by Asher B. Durand, oil on canvas, 20 1/8 by 30 1/8 inches, 1860

Lot 86 is a superb landscape by Asher B. Durand (1795-01886) entitled "A Showery Day Among the Mountains."  An oil on canvas, it measures 20 1/8 by 30 1/8 inches.  It was painted in 1860.  It has an estimate of $70,000 to $90,000.  It sold for $87,500.


Large Cropsey

Lot 54, "The Hudson (Scene On the Hudson; On the Hudson)," by Jasper Francis Cropsey, oil on canvas, 12 1/2 by 20 inches, 1877

Lot 54 is a beautiful and classic Hudson River scene by Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823-1900).  An oil on canvas, it measures 12 1/2 by 20 inches and was painted in 1877.  It has an estimate of $200,000 to $400,000.  It sold for $346,000.

Small Cropsey

Lot 37, "Boating on the Hudson (Sailboat near Hook Mountain)," by Jasper Francis Cropsey, oil on canvas, 14 by 12 inches, 1887

A smaller but also very fine Cropsey is Lot 37, "Boating on the Hudson (Sailboat near Hook Mountain)."  An oil on canvas, it measues 14 by 12 inches.  It was painted in 1887.  It has a modest estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.  It sold for $28,750.


Bricher

Lot 82, "On the Meadows of Old Newburyport," by Alfred Thompson Bricher, watercolor and goache on paper 13 by 26 inches, 1873

Lot 82 is a very fine watercolor and gouache on paper by Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908) entitled "On the Meadow of Old Newburyport."  It measures 13 by 26 inches and was painted in 1873.  It was once owned by Jo Ann and Julian Ganz Jr.   It has a modest estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.  It sold for $50,000.


Moran

Lot 36, "Clouds in the Canyon (Grand Canyon)," by Thomas Moran, oil on canvas, 12 1/2 by 19 1/2 inches, 1918

Lot 36 is a classic and very fine oil on canvas by the Grand Canyon by Thomas Moran (1837-1926).  It measures 12 1/2 by 19 1/2 inches and was painted in 1918.  It has an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.  It sold for $910,000.


Blakelock

Lot 25, "Shanties in Harlem," by Ralph Albert Blakelock, oil on canvas, 18 by 32 inches, 1874

Lot 25 is an extremely atypical and quite impressionistic scene of "Shanties in Harlem" by Ralph Albert Blakelock (1847-1919).  An oil on canvas, it measures 18 by 32 inches and is dated 1874.

The lot has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $112,500.

Green Blakelock

Lot  79, "Stilly Night," by Ralph Albert Blakelock, oil on canvas, 30 3/8 by 22 inches

Lot 79, "Stilly Night" is a noctural scene with an Indian in a canoe by Ralph Albert Blakelock.  An oil on canvas, it measures 30 3/8 by 22 inches and the author has a similar but smaller horizontal version.  This lot has an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000.  It sold for $212,500.

Dove

Lot 1, "Centerport Series No. 28," by Arthur Garfield Dove, gouache on paper, 6 by 9 inches, 1942

Lot 1 is a very strong, small, abstract composition by Arthur Garfield Dove (1880-1946) entitled "Centerport Series No. 28."  A gouache on paper, it measures 6 by 9 in 9 inches and was painted in 1942.  It is property of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.  It has a modest estimate of $25,000 to $35,000.  It sold for $21,250.

Lot 45, "City College is Like a Beacon Over Harlem," by Jacob Lawrence, gouache on paper, 21 by 14 inches, 1943

Lot 45 is a great gouache on paper by Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) entitled "City College is Like a Beacon Over Harlem."  It measures 21 by 14 inches and was painted in 1943 when it was exhibited at The Downtown Gallery.  It has a modest estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.  It sold for $225,000.


Luks


Lot 2, "My Garden, Berk Hills," by George Benjamin Luks, watercolor and tempera on paper, 14 by 19 3/4 inches, circa 1931

Lot 2 is a very strong watercolor and tempera on paper by George Benjamin Luks (1867-1933) that is entitled "My Garden, Berk Hills."  It measures 14 by 19 3/4 inches and was painted circa 1931.  It was included in the "American Master Drawings" exhibit that was shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1976.  It has a very modest estimate of $12,000 to $18,000.  It sold for $100,000.


Ryder

Lot 78, "The Watering Place," by Albert Pinkham Ryder, oil on panel, 8 3/4 by 11 1/4 inches

Lot 78 is a fairly bright small oil on panel by Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917) entitled "The Watering Place."  It was exhibited in 1961 at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington.  It has an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000.  It sold for $106,250.

Peto

Lot 24, "Old Time Letter Rack," by John Frederick Peto, oil on canvas, 30 by 25 1/8 inches

Lot 24 is a superb "rack" picture by John Frederick Peto (1854-1907) entitled "Old Time Letter Rack."  An oil on canvas, it measures 30 by 25 1/8 inches and was included in the 2010 exhibition of
"Nature's Banquet: 19th Century American Paintings from the Manoogian Collection" at the Savannah College of Art and Design.  It has an estimate of $800,000 to $1,200,000.  It sold for $850,000.


Otis Kaye

Lot 19, "Easy Come, Easy Go," by Otis Kaye, oil on panel, 21 by 25 5/8 inches

Another fine still life is Lot 19, "Easy Come, Easy Go," by Otis Kaye (1885-1974).  An oil on panel, it measures 21 by 25 5/8 inches and was included in the Kaye exhibition this year at the New Britain Museum of American Art.  It has an estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.  It sold for $514,000.


Davies




Peacocks

Lot 12 is a beautiful bronze of three peacocks by Gaston Lachaise (1882-1935).  It measures 22 by 56 inches and was created in 1922.  It has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000.  It sold for $394,000.
