This morning auction of Post-War and Contemporary Art at Christie's November 10 has numerous studies by Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline (1910-1962) from the collection of Lee V. Eastman, a fine small sculpture by Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988), an impressive painting by Jack Tworkov (1900-1982), several small works by Wayne Thiebaud (b. 1920) and a nice Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) "Ocean Park" study.
Lot 254 is a strong ink on printed paper study for "Cardinal," by Franz Kline. It measures 8 by 6 inches and has an estimate of $150,000 to $200,000. It sold for $576,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.
Lot 222 is a good oil and ink on board by Kline that is untitled and measures 9 by 10 3/4 inches and has an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000. It sold for $204,000.
Another good work from the Eastman collection is Lot 229, "Untitled," by Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), an acrylic on canvas that measures 72 by 24 1/4 inches. Executed in 1974, it has an estimate of $120,000 to $150,000. It sold for $307,200. Lot 234 is a acrylic on paper work by Motherwell entitled "Tapestry study #5." It measures 22 by 11 1/2 inches and was painted in 1972. It has a modest estimate of $25,000 to $35,000. It sold for $54,000.
Lot 307 is a very fine small granite sculpture by Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988). It measures 10 1/4 by 13 1/2 by 20 1/2 inches and was executed in 1967. It has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000. It sold for $240,000.
Lot 228 is a strong oil on canvas by Jack Tworkov (1900-1982) entitled "Watergame. It measures 69 by 59 inches and was painted in 1955. It has a modest estimate of $100,000 to $150,000. It sold for $396,800.
Lot 247 is a nice untitled Ocean Park ink, acrylic and graphite on paper by Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) (See The City Review article on a Diebenkorn exhibition.) It mesaures 29 by 21 1/4 inches and was painted in 1974. It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000. It failed to sell.
Lot 266 is an interesting charcoal on paper collage on canvas by Lee Krasner (1908-1984). It measures 50 by 75 inches and was executed in 1976. It has an estimate of $70,000 to $90,000. It failed to sell.
The auction has four works by Wayne Thiebaud.
Lot 245, "Pie," is an oil on board that measures 8 3/4 by 12 inches and was painted in 1961. It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000. It sold for $486,400.
Lot 315 is a pleasant picture of a daffodil by Thiebaud. A pastel, gouache, watercolor and graphite over etching and aquatint on paper, it measures 23 by 16 inches and was executed in 1980. It has an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000. It sold for $329,600.
Lot 350, "Levee Island," is an oil on panel by Thiebaud that measures 11 1/2 by 17 inches and was painted in 1997. It has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000.
Lot 248 is a oil on canvas laid down on canvas of a pistol by Thiebaud. It measures 12 by 16 inches and was executed in 1970-1. It has an estimate of $250,000 to $300,000. It sold for $228,000.
Lot 309, "Imperfect Painting," is a good abstract work by Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997). An oil and magna on shaped canvas, it measures 46 by 100 inches and was executed in 1986. It has a modest estimate of $400,000 to $600,000. It sold for $520,000.
