This Fall 2010 Latin American Art auction at Christie's New York is highlighted by a very beautiful painting by Claudio Bravo (b. 1936) and several works by Matta and Botero and an interesting painting by Remedio Varo.

The Bravo is Lot 39, an oil on canvas that is entitled "A Couple" and measures 78 3/8 by 58 7/8 inches.  It was painted in 2003.  It has an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.  Bravo began painting packages tied with string in the 1960s but his more recent works add a new layer of meaning as they are grouped packages and here represent a couple.  It sold for $662,500 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

Lot 21 is a large and very fine bronze sculpture of a seated woman by Fernando Botero (b. 1932).  It measures 80 by 76 by 77 1/4 inches.  It was executed in 2002  and is an artist's proof of one of two.  Ithas an estimate of $650,000 to $850,000. It sold for $842,500.

The auction has many works by Botero including Lot 38, "Man with Cane," a bronze sculpture that is 40 1/2 inches high and was created in 1986; Lot 140, an untitled portrait that is an oil on canvas that measures 12 1/8 by 10 1/8 and was painted in 1962, Lot 39, a portrait oil on canvvas from 1965 that measures 25 by 24 1/4 inches; and Lot 42, "The Copyist," an oil on canvas from 1974 that measures 71 1/4 by 76 1/4 inches.  Lot 139 has an estimate of $50,000 to $70,000. It sold for $98,500. Lot 140 has an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000. It sold for $40,000.  Lot 38 has an estimate of $300,000 to $400,000.  It sold for $386,500.  Lot 42 has a modest estimate of $450,000 to $650,000. It sold for $602,500.
 
"Dos Personajes" by Tamayo

Lot  47 is a fabulous painting of two people by Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991).  An oil and sand and canvas that measures 37 1/2 by 51 1/8 inches, it was painted in 1984.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It was sold at Sotheby's May 24 2006 for $419,200 when it had an estimate of $300,000 to $400,000.  It sold for $842,500.
"Danza al sol" by Tamayo

Lot 10 is a very strong oil  and sand painting on canvas by Tamayo entitled "Danza al sol."  It measures 40 by 30 inches and was painted in 1948.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000. It sold for $662,500.

"Claustrophobia" by Tamayo

Another superb painting by Tamayo is Lot 51, "Claustrophobia."  An oil on canvas, it was painted in 1957 and measures 32 by 39 1/2 inches.  It has an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.  It sold for $782,500.

"Invocacion" by Varo

Lot 53 is an excellent acrylic on cardboard laid down on masonite by Remedios Varo (1908-1963).  It measures 19 1/2 by 17  3/4  inches and was painted in 1963.  It has an estimate of $450,000 to $650,000.  It was passed at $380,000.

"Mi general aspirina y sus hombres" by Carrington

Lot 54 is an interesting work by Leonora Carrington (b.1917) that is entitled "Mi general aspirina y sus hombres."  An oil on canvas, it measures 30 by 39 7/8 inches.  It has an estimate of $150,000 to $200,000.  It sold for $206,500.

"Untitled" by Matta

The cover illustration of the catalogue is Lot 26, an untitled oil on canvas by Matta (1911-2002).  It measures 28 by 35 3/4 inches and was  painted in 1942.  It has an estimate of $800,000 to $1,200,000.  It sold for $842,500.

The catalogue entry provides the following commentary by Abby McEwen, assistant professor at the University of Maryland at College Park:

"In the present work, Matta channels the explosive animus of the landscape through a metamorphic architecture of membranous, organic forms, and angular geometries.  Similar in feeling to the monumental canvas The Hanged Man (1942), for which it may have been a preparatory study, Untitled renders abstracted silhouettes of the female anatomy in lambent transparencies of grey cast within a vaporous, embryonic space....The distillation of combustible, volcanic energy within the fertile huiman body epitomizes the artist's belief in the essential oneness of man and nature..."

Lot 125 is a nice abstraction by Matta entitled "Untitled (appartenant au cycle des 'Aubes'."  An oil on canvas, it measures 24 1/8 by 24 7/8 inches.  It was painted in 1954 and has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.   It sold for $86,500.


"Ecrire sur un mur de flamme" by Matta

"Desnudo" by Soriano
