This day
auction of Contemporary Art at Christie's in New York is highlighted by
many fine works by such artists as Gerhart Richter, Wayne Thiebaud, Roy
Lichtenstein, David Parks, Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Motherwell and
Helen Frankenthaler.
Lot 364, "Abstraktes
Bild (767-2)," is a good example of the powerful and very colorful
abstractions of Gerhard Richter (b. 1832, see The City Review article).
An oil on canvas, it is 24 1/2 inches square. It
has an estimate of $350,000 to $450,000. It is the cover
illustration of the catalogue. It sold for $752,500 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The auction
has several works consigned by artist Kenneth Noland, the late Color
Field painter. Lot 112 is a large, double-sided oil on panel
by Hans Hofmann (1880-1966), entitled "Round Table, Vase of
Flowers/Round Table with Pipe." It measures 54 by
62 inches and was executed in 1939. The Matisse-style work has a modest
estimate of $150,000 to $200,000. It sold for $458,500.

"Beside the Sea #20," by Robert Motherwell, oil on paper, 29 by 23
inches, 1962
Another Noland consignment is
the very lovely and strong "Beside the Sea #20," Lot 114, by Robert
Motherwell (1915-1991). An oil on paper, it measures 29 by 23
inches and was executed in 1962. It has a modest estimate of
$60,000 to $80,000. It sold for $212,500.

very good bronze sculpture of "Infanta Margarita" by Manolo Valdez (b
1942). It is 26 inches high and was executed in 1997.
Several copies of a much larger version are currently on
display at Columbus Circle. This lot has an estimate of
$150,000 to $200,000. It sold for $254,500.
Lot 378 is a large and very impressive work by Valdez entituted
"Retrato de Mujer." It is an oil and fabric collage on burlap
that measures 63 1/4 by 55 1/4 inches and was executed in 2003.
It has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000. It sold for $350,500.
