This day auction of Impressionist & Modern Art at Sotheby's November 3, 2010 is full of many choice selections including very fine works by Paul Klee, Georges Valmier, Louis Marcoussis, Auguste Herbin, André Lhote, Emile Othon Friesz, and Giorgio de Chirco.

Lot 342, "Schleiertanz (Veil Dance)," is a great watercolor on ink transfer drawing on paper laid down on board on the artist's mount by Paul Klee (1879-1940).  It measures 10 1/8 by 15 3/4 inches and was executed in 1920.  It was once in the collection of Harry Fuld Senior of Frankfurt and was subsequently at the Jewish Restitution Successor organiation.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $400,000. It sold for $326,500 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

"Nature morte, fourchette" by Picasso

Lot 382 is a very strong and good still life by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973).  An oil on canvas, it measures 15 by 18 1/2 inches and was executed in 1924.  It has a modest estimate of $350,000 to $450,000.  It sold for $614,500.

"La Porte Rose" by Valmier

Lot 384 is a very fine painting by Georges Valmier (1885-1937) entitled "La Porte Rose."  An oil on canvas, it measures 45 by 57 1/2 inches.  It was painted in 1927 and has an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.  It failed to sell.

"Composition" by Herbin

Lot 109 is a very fine abstract vertical composition by Auguste Herbin (1882-1960).  An oil on canvas, it measures 29 by 21 1/2 inches.  It was painted in 1920.  It has a modest estimate of $50,000 to $70,000. It sold for $74,500.

"Couple" by Marcoussis

Lot 108 is an impressive oil on glass by Louis Marcoussis (1883-1941).  Entitled "Couple," it measures 26 by 13 1/2 inches and was executed in 1922.  It has a modest estimate of $70,000 to $90,000.  It sold for $104,500.

"Simone sur la Terrasse" by Lhote

Lot 209 is a very good composition by André Lhote (1885-1962).  Entitled "Simon sur la terrasse," it is an oil on canvas that measures 19 7/8 by 24 5/8 inches.  It has a modest estimate of $35,000 to $45,000. It failed to sell.

"Hommage ŕ Chardin" by Lhote

Another excellent work by Lhote is Lot 214, "Hommage ŕ Chardin."  It is an oil on canvas that measures 28 3/4 by 30 1/4 inches and was executed in 1930.  It has an estimate of $50,000 to $70,000.  It sold for $74,500.

"Personage au Nez Rouge" by Miró

Lot 320 is a strong and interesting work by Joan Miró (1893-1983).  Entitled "Personage au Nez Rouge," it is a painted and glazed assembled ceramic that measures 17 5/8 by 13 3/8 inches.  It was executed in 1956.  It has  an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000. It failed to sell.

"Fleurs sur fond vert" by Ernst

Lot 329 is an excellent painting by Max Ernst (1891-1976) that is entitled "Fleurs sur fond vert."  An oil on canvas, it measures 25 5/8 by 31 7/8 inches.  It was painted in 1928.  It has an estimate of $280,000 to $350,000. It failed to sell.

"Le Muse Inquietanti (Restless Muse)" by de Chirico

Lot 333 is a very fine work by Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) entitled "Le Muse Inquietanti (Restless Muse)."  An oil on canvas, it measures 38 1/4 by 26 inches and was painted circa 1960.  It has an estimate of $700,000 to $1,000,000. It sold for $842,500.

"Oiseau dans le ciel" by Braque

Lot 187 is a large and lyrical painting by Georges Braque (1882-1963) of a bird in the sky.  An oil on canvas, it measures 25 5/8 by 36 1/4 inches.  It was painted in 1960.  It has an etimate of $450,000 to $650,000. It sold for $902,500.

"L'Orangerie ŕ Versailles" by Vlaminck

Lot 176 is a very strong painting by Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958) of "L'Orangerie ŕ Versailles."  It is an oil on canvas that measures 25 3/4 by 32 inches.  It was painted in 1910.  It has an estimate of $180,000 to $250,000. It failed to sell.

"La Ciotat - Paysage," by Friesz

Perhaps the finest work in the auction is Lot 174, "La Ciotat - Paysage," an excellent Fauvist landscape by Emile Othon Friesz (1879-1949).  An oil on canvas, it measures 18 1/4 by 14 7/8 inches and was painted in 1907.  It has a very modest estimate of $150,000 to $200,000. It sold for $230,500.

"Le Chenal, de la Rochelle" by Signac

Lot 162 is a very fine but small harbor scene by Paul Signac (1863-1935) entitled "Le Chenal de la Rochelle."  An oil on canvas, it measures 18 1/4 by 21 3/4 inches and was painted in 1927.  It has an estimate of $700,000 to $1,000,000. It sold for $1,010,500.

"Etretat, Falaise d'Aval" by Monet

Lot 134 is a very lovely soft pastel of Etretat by Claude Monet (1840-1926).  It measures 8 3/4 by 15 3/4 inches and was executed circa 1885.  It has a modest estimate of $300,000 to $400,000. It sold for $746,500.
