November 29, 2010 at Sotheby's New York is highlighted by several works
by Georgia 0'Keeffe, a major painting by Alfred Jacob Miller, and
superb works by Marsden Hartley, Milton Avery, and Francis A.
Silva.
The cover illlustration of the catalogue is Lot 10,
"Autumn Leaf II," by Georgia O'Keeffe, an excellent oil on canvas that
measures 32 by 21 inches and was painted in 1927. It was once
in
the collection of Albert D. Lasker of New York. It has a
modets
estimate of $1,500,000 to $2.500,000. It sold for $4,282,500
including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this
article.
The auction total was 57 of the 72 offered lots selling for
$27,608,500.

Another
impressive work by O'Keeffe is Lot 25,"A White Camellia," a pastel on
board that measures 21 1/2 by 27 1/2 inches and was painted in 1938.
It was once in the collection of Elizabeth Arden of New York
and
was exhibited at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in
2000. It has a modest estimate of $1,200,000 to
$1,800,000.
It sold for
$3,218,500.

Lot
55, "Caravan en Route (Sir William Drummond Stewart's Caravan)," by
Alfred Jacob Miller, oil on canvas, 21 1/2 by 48 inches,
circa 1850
Lot 55 is a
large oil on canvas by Alfred Jacob Miller (1810-1874) of Sir William
Drummon's Caravan in 1937. It is an interesting composition
in the foreground with fine perspective although the sky is relatively
tame for Miller, one of the first great artists of the American West
who was noted for his very romantic and stylized depiction of American
Indians. The lot measures 21 1/2 by 48 inches and was painted
circa 1850. It was once in the collection of the Boatmen's
National Bank of St. Louis. It has an estimate of $1,000,000
to $1,500,000. It
sold for $1,762,500.

14, "Sailboats at Sunset," by Francis A. Silva, oil on canvas, 9 by 18
inches
Francis
A. Silva (1835-1886) is one of the stars of the Luminist
school of
painting in America even if many of his works radiant considerable
heated color. Lot 14, "Sailboats at Sunset," is a superb
example
of his work and is an oilon canvas that measures 9 by 18 inches.
It has a modest estimate of $20,000 to $30,000. It sold for $272,500!

40, "Near Leeds, New York," by George Inness, oil on canvas, 20 by 30
inches
Lot 40 is a fine
Catskill scene by George Inness (1825-1894) entitled "Near Leeds, New
York." The oil on canvas measures 20 by 30 inches.
It has a modest estimate of $150,000 to $250,000. It sold for $422,500.
