Matta

Lot 9, "Nada," by Matta, oil on canvas, 28 3/4 by 36 1/4 inches, 1943

By Carter B. Horsley

This Latin American Art auctions at Sotheby's New York November 19 and 20, 2012 are highlighted by very good works by Matta, Lam, Toledo and good works by Obregon, Rivera, and Gego.

The cover illustration of the catalogue is Lot 9, "Nada," by Matta (1911-2002), an oil on canvas that measures 28 3/4 by 36 1/4 inches.  It was painted in 1943.

The  catalogue entry provides the following excellent commentary:

"It marks a departure from the brilliant throbbing color and multi-dimensional spaces of his Mexican-inspired volcanic series, exemplified by The Earth is a Man, 1942, and points toward the dark depths and irridisence of The Vertigo of Eros, 1943-33.  In Nada the artist pulls down a dark curtain that leaves only peephole glimpses of distant light and color.  There is no stabilizing horizon, only unbounded space and the suggestion of gravitation forces keeping galaxes in motion.  Black and blue-black dominate, giving a sense of limitless depth and field for the play of energies represented by thin lines scraped into the dark surfaces or painting in white over the final composition with electrifiying effect."

It has an estimate of $1,500,000 to $2,000,000.  It sold for $1,818,500 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

Of the 55 offered lots in the evening sale,  49 sold, or 89 percent, for a total of $19,275,250, just under the high estimate of the auction.
