Valtat

Lot 215, "La Souris Blanche," by Louis Valtat, oil on canvas, 32 by 39 5/8 inches, 1893

The Impressionist Art Sale November 7, 2014 at Sotheby's New York is highlighted by a great interior scene with a nude woman and a mouse by Valtat, several fine works by Vuillard, a strong Miro, a very good Tanguy, a couple of very pleasant Renoirs, an impressive d'Espagnat and an excellent Redon.

Lot 215, "La Souris Blanche," by Louis Valtat (1869-1952) depicts a nude woman seated on a carpet in front of a white mouse.  An oil on canvas, it measures 32 by6 39 5/8 inches and it once belonged to Arthur Altschul of New York.  It has a modest estimate of $120,000 to $150,000.  It failed to sell.

The sale totalled $47,870,500 including buyers' premiums with 71.1 percent of the 322 offered lots selling.

Lot 167, "La Petit dejeuner de Madame Vuillard, by Edouard Vuillard, glue-based distempter on board and laid down on craddled panel, 23 1/4 by 28 7/8 inches, circa 1915-6

Lot 167 is a painting of the Mrs. Vuillard at her breakfast table by Edouard Vuillard, a glue-based distemper on board laid down on craddled panel that measures 23 1/4 by 28 7/8 inches.  It was painted circa 1925.  It has been widely published.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It failed to sell.

Lot 242, "Le Carmisole orange," by Edouard Vuillard, pastel on paper, 18 1/8 inches high, circa 1890

Lot 242 is a pastel on paper by Vuillard entitled "Le Carmisole orange."  It is 18 1/8 inches high was painted circa 1890.  It is property from the estate of Gregory and Veronique Peck.  It has an estimate of $120,000 to $180,000.  It sold for $311,000.

There are several other Vuillards in the auction including the following two that are the property of a New York collector.

Lot 242, "Roses dans un Pichet," by Edouard Vuillard, oil on canvas, 17 1/8 by 18 5/8 inches, circa 1925

Lot 242 is a lovely and very painterly floral oil on canvas by Vuillard that measures 17 1/8 by 18 5/8 inches.  It was painted circa 1925.   It has an estimate of $300,000 to $400,000.  It sold for $293,000.

Another floral work by Vuillard, Lot 252, an oil on board that measures 9 1/4 by 9 7/8 inches and was painted circa 1910, had an estimate of $350,000 to $450,000.  It sold for $425,000.

Lot 403, "Suburb," by Edouard Vuillard, oil on board, 10 by 12 1/4 inches, circa 1900

Another Vuillard is Lot 403, a great oil on board entitled "Suburb" that measures 10 by 12 1/4 inches and was painted circa 1900.  It was exhibited at the High Museum in Atlanta in 1966.  It has an estimate of $30,000 to $40,000.  It sold for $37,500.

Lot 248, "Madame Hessel lisant sur la terrasse du Clos Cezanne," by Edouard Vuillard, pastel on paper, 10 1/8 by 13 1/2 inches, circa 1925

Lot 248 is a fine pastel on paper by Vuillard of "Madame Hessel lisant sur la terrasse du Clos Cezanne."  It measures 10 1/8 by 13 1/2 inches and was painted circa 1925.  The palette is unusually lush for the artist and despite its small size the impression is quite expansive.  It has an modest estimate of $70,000 to $100,000.  It failed to sell.

Despagnat

Lot 230, "Femmes et enfants dans la terrasse du moulin de Beaulieu a Vilennes-sur-Seine," by Georges d'Espagnat, oil on canvas, 55 1/4 by 128 1/2 inches, 1898

Lot 230 is an enormous and fine oil on canvas by Georges d'Espagnat (1870-1950).  It measures 55 1/4 by 128 1/2 inches and was painted in 1898.  It is entitled "Femmes et enfants dans la terrasse du moulin de Beaulieu a Vilennes-sur-Seine."  it has an estimate of $180,000 to $250,000.  It failed to sell.


Tanguy

Lot 335, "Sans titre," by Yves Tanguy, gouache on paper, 14 1/8 by 11 1/8 inches, 1946

Lot 335 is a very good gouache on paper by Yves Tanguy (1900-1955).  It has no title and measures 14 1/8 by 11 1/8 inches and was painted in 1946.  It has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000.  It sold for $245,000.

Kandinsky

Lot 150 is a abstract oil on canvas by Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) that is entitled "Gitterform (Netting)."  It measures 27 1/2 by 23 1/2 inches and was painted in 1927.  It has an estimate of $900,000 to $1,200,000.  It sold for $965,000.

Redon

Lot 166 is a very good floral pastel on paper by Odilon Redon (1840-1916).  It measures 23 1/8 by 18 1/2 inches and was painted in 1905.  It has an estimate of $550,000 to $650,000.  It sold for $629,000.

Sisley
