O"Keeffe Brooklyn Bridge

This November 19, 2015 auction of American Paintings  at Christie's New York is highlighted by a very strong selection of early 20th Century paintings.  It has several wonderful works by Georgia O'Keeffe, a great interior painting by William Merritt Chase, a great oil sketch by Mary  Cassatt, and excellent paintings by Stuart Davis, George Bellows, Marsden Hartley, Martin J. Heade, Thomas Moran and Samuel Colman.

The best lot in the auction is charcoal and chalk on paper of the Brooklyn Bridge by Georgia O'Keeffe.  It measures 39 7/8 by 29 1/2 inches and was executed in 1949.  It is property of the Doris Bry Trust.  It was exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 1983, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe in 2000.  It is more infinitely more exciting and futuristic than an oil painting of the same subject by the artist at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

It has a very modest estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.  It sold for $269,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The sale total was $45,390,250 with about 73.5 percent of the offered lots selling.

Lot 89, "Untitled (Road)," by Georgia O'Keeffe, pencil on paper, 13 3/4 by 22 inches, circa 1955-60

Lot 89 is a ghostly and very beautiful and lyrical abstraction by Georgia O'Keeffe.  A pencil on paper, it measures 13 3/4 by 22 inches and was painted circa 1955-1960. It is entitled "Untitled (Road)."  It has a modest estimate of $25,000 to $35,000.  It sold for $62,500.

Lot 67, "Misty Road," by Georgia O'Keeffe, oil on canvas, 20 by 16 inches, circa 1955-60

Another extremely fine O'Keeffe work is Lot 67, "Misty Road," an oil on canvas that measures 20 by 16 inches and was painted circa 1955-60.  It has an estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.  It sold for $329,000.

Lot 10, "Drawing 1," by Georgia O'Keeffe, charcoal on paper laid down on paper, 24 7/8 by 18 3/4 inches, 1959

Another good abstract O'Keeffe is Lot 10, "Drawing 1," a charcoal on paper laiddown on paper that measures 24 7/8 by 18 3/4 inches.  It was drawn in 1959.  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $197,000.




Sheeler

Lot 5, "Ore Into Iron," by Charles Sheeler, tempera and pencil on paper laid down on bord, 9 by 6 1/2 inches, 1953

Lot 5 is a beautiful tempera and pencil on paper laid down on board by Charles Sheeler (1883-1965) entitled "Ore Into Iron."  It measures 9 by 6 1/2 inches and was painted in 1953.  It is related to an oil painting by the artist at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston that is a masterpiece of 20th Century American Art.  It has a very modest estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.  It sold for $311,000.


Stella

Lot 80, "Nocturne No. 1," by Joseph Stella, pastel on paper, 19 by 24 1/2 inches circa 1919

Lot 80 is a fine abstract pastel on paper by Joseph Stella (1877-1946) entitled "Nocturne No. 1."  It measures 19 by 24 1/2 inches and was executed in 1919.  It was included in the Stella show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1994.  It is property from the Doris Bry Trust.  It has a modest estimate of $15,000 to $25,000.  It failed to sell.

Another fine Stella is Lot 86, a watercolor, gouache and pencil on paper entitled "Flowering Tropical Cactus."  It measures 24 3/4 by 18 1/2 inches and was executed circa 1938 and is from the same trust and was included in the same show.  It has a modest estimate of $10,000 to $15,000.  It sold for $32,500.

Lot 8, "Ways & Means," by Stuart Davis, oil on canvas, 24 by 32  inches, 1960

Lot 8 is an excellent abstract oil on canvas by Stuart Davis (1892-1964) entitled "Ways & Means."  It measures 24 by 32 inches and was painted in 1960.  It has been requested for the Stuart Davis 2016-7 exhibition scheduled for The Whitney Museum of American Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.  It has an estimate of $2,000,000 to $3,000,000.  It sold for $3,189,000.


Davis black

Lot 38, "Composition (June Jitterbug Jive)," by Stuart Davis, oil on canvas, 8 by 12 inches, 1940

The work in the auction with the best title if Lot 38, "June Jitterbug Jive," by Stuart Davis.  An oil on canvas, it measures 8 by 12 inches and was painted in 1940.  It is from the Arthur and Anita Kahn Collection of New York and was exhibited that the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1991-2 in a retrospective on the artist.,  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.  It sold for $689,000.

Davis orange

Lot 39, "Autumn Landscape," by Arthur Dove, oil on canvas, 8 by 12 inches, 1940

A companion piece to Lot 38 with the same measurements, date and ownership, is Lot 39, "Autumn Landscape."  It once belonged to Millard Meiss and has been widely exhibited.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.  It sold for $905,000.

George L K Morris

Lot 64 is a great abstract oil on canvas by George Lovett Kingsland Morris (1905-1975) entitled "Labyrinth No. 1."  It measures 25 by 18 1/4 inches and was painted in 1955-6.  It is from the collection of Dr. Herbert Kayden and Gabrielle Reem.  It has a modest estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.  It failed to sell.

Lot 74 is a small "Abstraction" by Morris from the same collection.  An oil on board, it measures 13 by 15 1/2 inches and has a modest estimate of $10,000 to $15,000.  It sold for $12,500.


Gugliemi

Lot 78, "Serenade," by O. Louis Gugliemi, tempera on masonite, 19 7/8 by 26 1/8 inches, 1954

Another fine work from the same collection is Lot 78, "Serenade," by O. Louis Gugliemi, a tempera on masonite.  It measures 19 7/8 by 26 1/8 inches and was painted in 1954.  It has a modest estimate of $15,000 to $25,000.  It sold for $15,000.

Dove gray

Lot 31 is a very abstract charcoal on paper of a barn interior by Arthur Dove (1880-1946).  It measures 21 1/4 by 18 inches and was painted circa 1917.  It has an estimate of $70,000 to $100,000.  It sold for $62,500.


Bluemner

Lot 36, "Asleep (Vernal Moon)," by Oscar Bluemner, watercolor on paper, 9 1/2 by 12 3/4 inches, 1927

Lot 36 is a pleasant watercolor on paper by Oscar Bluemner (1867-1938) entitled "Asleep (Vernal Moon)."  It measures 9 1/2 by 12 3/4 inches and was painted in 1927.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  it sold for $487,500.


Hartley


Lot 13, "Camden Hills fro Baker's Island," by Marsden Hartley, oil on board, 22 by 28 inches, 1938

Lot 13 is a strong Maine landscape by Marsden Hartley (1977-1943) entitled "Camden Hills from Baker's Island."  An oil on board, it measures 22 by 28 inches and was painted in 1938.  It was on loan to the Cleveland Museum of Art from 1945 to 1980.  It has an estimate of $1,000,000 to $1,500,000.  It sold for $2,741,000.


Bellows

Lot 14, "The Dock," by George Wesley Bellows, oil on panel, 15 by 19 1/2 inches, 1913

Lot 14, "The Dock," is a smaller and better painting than the Hartley by George Wesley Bellows (1882-1925).  An oil on panel, it measures 15 by 19 1/2 inches and was painted in 1913.  It has an estimate of $1,500,000 to $2,500,000.  It sold for $1,985,000.

Avery

Lot 87, "Country Road," by Milton Avery, oil on canvas, 28 by 26 inches, circa 1935

Lot 87 is  an excellent landscaped by Milton Avery (1885-1965) entitled "Country Road."  An oil on canvas, it measures 28 by 36 inches and was painted circa 1935. It has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000.  It sold for $389,000.


Lawrence

Lot 79, "The Fur Coat," by Jacob Lawrence, tempera and pencil on board, 20 by 16 inches, 1948

Lot 79 is a superb tempera and pencil on board by Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) entitled "The Fur Coat."  It measures 20 by 16 inches and was painted in 1948. It has an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.  It sold for $305,000.


Hassam

Lot 112, "Andover, Massachusetts," is a large landscape by Childe Hassam (1859-1935).  An oil on canvas, it measures 30 by 75 1/2 inches and was painted in 1930.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It failed to sell.


Cassatt


Lot 24, Head of Smiling Child," by Mary Cassatt, oil on canvas, 14 by 12 inches, circa 1906-7

Lot 24 is an excellent oil on canvas sketch of the "Head of Smiling Child," by Mary Cassatt (1844-1926).  It measures 14 by 12 inches and was painted circa 1906-7.  It is property from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Davenport Jr.  The catalogue entry states that this is a study for the artist's "Mother and a Child in a Boat" in the Addison Gallery of American Art at the Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., but that seems a bit far-fetched as that child has longer and darker hair and is not smiling.  Ms. Cassatt's sketches are among the greatest achievements of American Impressionism.  The lot has an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.  It sold for $869,000.


Chase

Lot 15, "The Croquet Game," by William Merritt Chase, oil on canvas, 32 by 35 inches, circa 1888

Lot 15 is a large painting by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) entitled "The Croquet Game."  It is an oil on canvas that measures 32 by 35 inches and was painted circa 1888.  It was once owned by Vincent and Brooke Astor of New York and is from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Davenport Jr.  It has been requested for inclusion in the 2016-7 exhibition on the artist at The Phillips Collection in Washington, which owns Chase's interior masterpiece, "Hide and Seek,"  the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Terra Foundation for American Art in Chicago and the Fondazione Musei Civic Venezia. It has a modest estimate of $4,000,000 to $6,000,000.  It failed to sell.


Moran

Lot 101, "Jupiter Terrace, Yellowstone," by Thomas Moran, oil on canvas, 20 by 30 inches, 1893

Lot 101 is an extremely painterly landscape by Thomas Moran entitled "Jupiter Terrace, Yellowstone."  An oil on canvas, it measures 20 by 30 inches and was painted in 1893.  It was once part of The Regis Collectin in Minneapolis. It has an estimate of $4,500,000 to $6,500,000.  It failed to sell.

Hummingbird by Heade

Lot 16, "Nesting Hummingbirds, Brazilian Landscape," by Martin J. Heade, oil on canvas, 20 by 12 inches, circa 1870-3

Lot 16, "Nesting Hummingbirds, Brazilian Landscape" is a good oil on canvas by Martin J. Heade *(1819-1904).  It measures 20 by 12 inches and was painted circa 1870-3.  The catalogue points out that Heade's hummingbird pictures were not always accurate, however beautiful.  The lot, which is from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Davenport Jr., has an estimate of $700,000 to $1,000,000.  It sold for $1,745,000.

Lot 132 is a nice coastal scene by Martin J. Heade entitled "Sailboats off the Connecticut Shore," an oil on canvas that measures 9 by 12 1/2 inches.  It was painted circa 1870-5.  It has an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000.  It sold for $173,000.


Colman

Lot 129, "Becalmed in the Highlands," by Samuel Colman, oil on canvas, 12 by 22 inches, 1865

Lot 129 is an excellent riverscape by Samuel Colman (1780-1845) entitled "Becalmed in the Highlands."  An oil on canvas, it measures 12 by 22 inches and was painted in 1865.  It once belonged to JoAnn and Julian Ganz Jr. of Los Angeles. It has an estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.  It sold for $185,000.


Campbell Singer Building

Lot 21, "Liberty Street Crevasse, N.Y.C.," by Colin Campbell Cooper, oil on canvas, 39 by 18 1/8 inches, 1910

Lot 21 is a fine cityscape by Colin Campbell Cooper (1856-1937) entitled "Liberty Street Crevasse, N.Y.C."  It depicts the Singer Tower and is an oil on canvas that measures 39 by 18 1/8 inches and was painted in 1910.  It was shown in the American Pavilion of the International Exposition of Art and History in Rome in 1911.  It has an estimate of $50,000 to $70,000.  It sold for $102,500.

A large and uninteresting oil on canvas entitled "Norman Rockwell Visits a Country Editor," has an estimate of $10,000,000 to $15,000,000.  It measures 33 by 63 inches and was painted in 1946 and is property of the National Press Club Journalism Institute.  It was illustrated in the Saturday Evening Post.  It sold for $11,589,000.
