Lai Loy (1926-2012)
was an art dealer based in Hong Kong who helped many leading art
collectors that city form their collection. His son and
daughter-in-law, Peter Lai and Sandee would carry on his tradition as
prominent art dealers in Chinese hardwood furniture and other works of
art.
The cover lot of the auction catalogue is Lot 915, a very rate
huanghuali square box-form stool, fangdeng, from the 17th Century.
It measures 18 1/2 by 17 3/4 inches. The catalogue
notes that "the form is distinguished by the simple elegance and
refined geometry of its design. ity has an estimate of
$120,000 to $180,000. It
sold for $269,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results
mentioned in this article.
The sale total was
$6,989,313 with 90 percent of the offered lots selling.
