Box stool

Lai Loy (1926-2012) was an art dealer based in Hong Kong who helped many leading art collectors that city form their collection.  His son and daughter-in-law, Peter Lai and Sandee would carry on his tradition as prominent art dealers in Chinese hardwood furniture and other works of art.

The cover lot of the auction catalogue is Lot 915, a very rate huanghuali square box-form stool, fangdeng, from the 17th Century.  It measures 18 1/2 by 17 3/4 inches.  The catalogue notes that "the form is distinguished by the simple elegance and refined geometry of its design.  ity has an estimate of $120,000 to $180,000.  It sold for $269,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The sale total was $6,989,313 with 90 percent of the offered lots selling.

Lot 916 is a very rare and unusual large huanghuali corner-leg side table, Jiaozhuo.  It is 72 inches long and dates to the 17th Century.  It has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000.  It sold for $629,000.

A larger table is Lot 919, a magnificent and very rare massive nanmu-inset huanghuali painting table, Hua'an, 17th century, 94 3/8 inches long.  It has an estimate of $1,000,000 to $1,500,000.  It sold for $2,261,000.

Turquoise jar 924

Lot 924, very rare Imperial opaque turquoise green glass-compressed globular vase, 6 inches high, Qianlong four-character wheel-cut mark in a double square and of the period (1736-1795)

Lot 924 is a very rare Imperial opaque turquoise green glass-compressed globular vase that is 6 inches in diameter and has a Qianlong four-character wheel-cut mark in a double square and of the period (1736-1795).  It has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.  It sold for $137,000.

Lot 925 is a very rare and finely carved amber brush-washer.  It is 6 1/8 inches long and is dated from the 18th to the early 19th Century.,  It was once with the Viscount Astor at Cliveden.  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $149,000.

Amber vase 926

Lot 926 is a very rare yellow amber flantened baluster vase and cover.  It is 8 7/8 inches high and is dated 18th -19th century.  It was once with the Viscount Astor at Cliveden.   It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $68,750.

Scholar's rock 917


Lot 917, "lingbi scholar's rock," 23 1/4 inches high

Lot 917 is a lingbi scholar's rock that is23 1/4 inches high and according to the catlogue it is suggestiveof a carp leaping into the air.  The front has a lustrous black color but the rear has a good amount of the oroiginal mottled black, white and red coloration.  It is 23 1/4 inches high.  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It failed to sell.



Qi Bashi 912

Lot 912, "Morning Glories," by Qi Bashi, scroll, ink and color on paper, 10 3/8 by 12 7/8 inches

Lot 912, is a strong ink and color on paper scroll by Qi Bashi (1863-1957) entitled "Morning Glories."  It measures 10 3/8 by 12 7/8  inches.  It has an estimate of $25,000 to $30,000.  It sold for $65,000.


Fan 926

Lot 946. "Plum Blossoms," by Zhou Zhimian, fan leaf, mounted, ink and color on gold paper, 6 3/4 by 20 1/8 inches, dated 1596

Lot 946 is a lovely fan leaf by Zhou Zimian (1521-1610) entitled "Plum Blossoms."  It measures 6 3/4 by 20 1/8 inches andis dated 1596. It has an estimate of $8,000 to $10,000.  It sold for $9,375.



Shanyue 942

Lot 942, "Ducks," is a ink and color on paper scroll by Guan Shanyue (1912-2000).  It measures 20 by 46 1/4 inches.  It has an estimate of $12,000 to $18,000.  It sold for $43,750.


Yellows 948

Lot 948 is an attractive hanging scroll of ink and color on paper by Ye Qijia (b. 1957) entitled "Lotus Pond."  It measures 33 1/2 by 25 1/2 inches.  It has an estimate of $1,000 to $2,000.  It failed to sell.
