Tamayo

Lot 42, "Tres Personages," by Rufino Tamayo, oil and sand on canvas, 38 1/4 by 51 1/4 inches, 1970

The November 9 and 10, 2015 Latin American Art auction at Christie's New York is highlighted by two superb paintings by Rufino Tamayo, a major one by Joaquin Torres-Garcia, a fine Wilfredo Lam, two excellent paintings by Rodolfo Nieto, and a wonderful sculpture by Gonzalo Fonseca.

Lot 42 is a great oil and sand on canvas by Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991) entitled "Tres Personages."  It measures 38 1/4 by 51 1/4 inches and was painted in 1970.  It has been widely exhibited and published.

The lot has an estimate of $1,500,000 to $2,000,000.  It sold for $1,345,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The sale total was $24,963,250 with 91.2 percent of the 281 offered lots selling.

Tamayo violet


Lot 37, "Dos Figuras," by Rufino Tamayo, acrylic on canvas, 51 1/4 by 38 3/16 inches, 1975

Lot 37, is a very pleasant abstract acrylic on canvas by Rufino Tamayo entitled "Dos Figuras."  It measures 51 1/4 by 38 3/16 inches and was painted in 1975. It has been exhibited by the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the Phillips Collection in Washington.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.  It sold for $449,000.

Nieto 2


Lot 15, "Personnage egare," by Rodolfo Nieto, oil on canvas, 45 by 57 1/2 inches, 1972

Lot 15 is a strong and very vibrant oil on canvas by Rodolfo Nieto (1936-1985).  It is entitled "Personnage egare" and measures 45 by 57 1/2 inches.  It was painted in 1972.

It has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000.  It failed to sell.


Nieto 1


Lot 36, "Mujer en la regardera," by Rodolfo Nieto, oil on canvas, 44 1/2 by 57 1/4 inches

Lot 36 is a fine abstraction by Nieto entitled "Mujer en la regardera."  An oil on canvas, it measures 44 1/2 by 57 1/4 inches..  It has an estimate of $150,000 to $200,000.  It sold for $185,000.


Torress-Garcia

Lot 8, "Composition Nord - Art Constructif," by Joaquin Torres-Garcia, oil on board laid down on masonite,  31 1/4 by 23 5/8 inches, 1931

Lot 8, "Composition Nord - Art Constructif," is an oil on board laid down by masonite by Joaquin Torres-Garcia (1874-1949).  It measures 31 1/4 by 23 5/8 inches and was painted in 1931.  It has been widely exhibited and published.  The cover illustration of the catalogue, the work is a classic example of the artist's Neo-Plastic Constructive Universalism.  It has an estimate of $1,500,000 to $2,000,000.  It sold for $2,105,000.

Lot 9 is a very fine and classic watercolor on rice paper by Diego Rivera (1886-1957) entitled "Cargando alcatraces (tres mujeres, una sentada)."  It measures 11 by 15 inches and was painted in 1940.  It has an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000.  It sold for $293,000.

Lot 73 is a striking oil and plaster on canvas by Adriana Varejao (b. 1964) entitled "Espelho D'Aqua."  It measures 43 7/8 inches square and was created in 2008.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.  It sold for $365,000.

Lot 66 is a large digital C-print created in 2011 by Vic Muniz (b. 1961) entitled "New York City after George Bellows (Pictures of Magazines 2)."  It measures 71 by 105 1/2 inches.  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $143,000.


Larraz

Lot 55, "Diva," by Julio Larraz, oil on canvas, 58 1/2 by 71 5/8 inches, 2004

Lot 55, "Diva," is an oil on canvas by Julio Larraz (b. 1944) that measures 58 1/2 by 71 5/8.   It was painted in 2004 and the seated women bears a very strong resemblance to a woman in a famous Sargeant painting.  The lot has estimate of $150,000 to $200,000.  It sold for $149,000.

Lot 52 is a large oil on canvas by Fernando Botero that is entitled "Homage to Bonnard."  It measures 81 1/2 by 56 1/4 inches and was painted in 1971.  It has an estimate $600,000 to $900,000.  It sold for $653,000.



Bravo
