sale of Impressionist & Modern Art at Sotheby's New York November
6, 2015 is highlighted by 20 prints for "Jazz (Portfolio of 20)" by
Henry Matisse (1869-1954), a very pleasant small pastel landscape by
Claude Monet, an oil figure of a naked man by Paul Cezanne, two nice
works by Pierre Bonnard, an impressive and large painting by Georges
D'Espagnat, impressive
sculptures by Julio Gonzalez and Joan Miro.
Lot 367 is "Jazz (Portfolio of 20)" by Henry Matisse. It is
numbered 34 in an 1947 edition of 250. "The combination of bright
colors and spontaneous subject matter evoke a joie de vivre which
further elevates Jazz as one
of the most beautiful, groundbreaking and personal artist's books of
the twentieth century," according to the catalogue. The lot has
an estimate of $450,000 to $650,000. It sold for $1,090,000 including the
buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.
The
sale total was $53.339,500 with about 78 percent of the 281 offered
lots selling.
