artist and one his paintings of them is the cover illustration for this
season's Latin American Modern Art catalogue at Sotheby's. This
lot has an estimate of $1,200,000 to $1,800,000. It sold for $2,167,000, the highest price
of the auction. The one being offered at Sotheby's is a
better picture and was once owned by Audrey Hepburn, but has the same
estimate and dimensions as this lot but was painted in 1957.

pyroxilin on masonite by David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896-1974).
Entitled "La Conesa," it measures 48 by 67 inchess and was painted in
1958. The catalogue notes that this work is "an important study
for a major mural project now at the National Museum of History in
Mexico City. "La Conesa," or "the White Kitten," as was known was
a celebrated performer. The lot has a modest estimate of $150,000
to $200,000. It sold for $343,500.
