43 is an excellent kinetic sculpture by Jesus Rafael Soto (1923-2005)
entitled "Mural a tres columnas." The painted wood, metal and
nylon wire work measures 80 1/2 by 60 inches and was created in
1969. In an 1971 essay quoted in the catalogue entry for the
late, Arturo Uslar Pietri wrote of the artist that "by the
superimposition on different planes of thin lines and mobile objects,
he created an infinite possibility of vibration and variation: those
slender metal rods or wire spider webs which tremble unceasingly over
the black and white stripes of the background/ As the spectator
moves he enters into this play, provokes it and completes it."
The lot has an estimate of $650,000 to $850,000. It failed to sell.
