The History of Now The Collection of David Teiger auction preceeds the Post-War and Contemporary Art evening auction at Sotheby's New York November 14, 2018 and is highlighted by a fine Peter Doig, and good works by Richard Diebenkorn, Willem de Kooning, Takashi Murakami, Dana Schutz, Jeff Koons and Mark Grotjahn.
Lot 6 is a large and very fine oil on canvas by Peter Doig (b. 1959) entitled "House of Pictures." It measures 76 3/4 by 116 1/4 inches and was painted in 2002. It has been widely exhibited.
The catalogue entry provides the following commentary:
"Like a still from a cinematic plot to which we have no access, House of Pictures invokes a sense of nostalgia which lies just beyond the boundaries of specific memory. Suffused with an intangible allure as a forgotten dream, the painting suggests narrative without providing context, drawing the viewer irresistibly into the myriad web of sensorial and visual allusions depicted within. As is archetypical of Doig's practice, the captivating scene of House of Pictures is informed by a unique mixture of the artist's personal memories and found imagery. The sweeping facade depicted in House of Pictures is, in fact, based upon an image of a once-operating art establishment: Haus der Bilder Margaret Klewan, an art gallery in Vienna that Doig discovered years earlier."
The painting is haunting and mysterious and its many black components are glorious. Who is the long-haired person looking into one of the large windows, all of which seem to show abstract and handsome black-and-white compositions?
The painting has an estimate of $8,000,000 to $12,000,000. It sold for $9,105,200 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

that this painting was "a classic example of de Kooning's late
paintings,
the pure white background set against areas of red, yellow and
blue (see The City Review article on
de Kooning exhibition). We can see no discernible imagery,
except for these languid,
sinuous lines. The serpentine curves recall his friend Arshile
Gorky's drawing, which in turn emulate natural, organic forms."
