Renoir 134

Lot 134, "Femme au jardin," by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, oil on canvas, 25 3/4 by 21 1/2 inches, circa 1890

The November 12, 2018 auction of Impressionist & Modern Art Works on Paper and Day Sale at Christie's New York is a highlighted by a lovely Renoir, several good Picassos, and Vuillards, and some fine works by Signac, Sidaner, Ernst, Hepworth and Montezin.

Lot 172, "Femme au jardin," is a very handsome oil on canvas by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919).  It measures 25 3/4 by 21 1/2 inches and was painted circa 1890.  It is the cover illustration of the catalogue and is property of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.  It has an estimate of $1,000,000 to $1,500,000.  It sold for $1,395,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The auction total was $50,040,625.  The first 25 lots were "A Modernist Vision: Property from the Collection of Nelson and Happy Rockefeller" and they totalled $7,143,250.

Valtat 171

Lot 171, "Portrait de Madame Valtat," by Louis Valtat, oil on canvas, 39 3/8 by 31 7/8 inches, 1904

Lot 171 is a very strong Fauve portrait of the artist's wife by Louis Valtat (1869-1952).  An oil on canvas, it was painted in 1904 and measures 39 3/8 by 31 7/8 inches and was exhibited at the Tate Gallery in London 1995.  It has a modest estimate of $200,000 to $300,000.  It sold for $471,000.

Friesz 182

Lot 182, "La Ciotat," by Emile-Othon Friesz, oil on canvas, 25 1/2 by 31 7/8 inches, 1907

Lot 182 is a spectacular and very sensuous Fauve landscape by Emile-Othon Friesz (1879-1949) that entitled "La Ciotat."  An oil on canvas, it measures 25 1/2 gy 31 7/8 inches and was painted in 1907.  It has been widely published.  It has a modest estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.  It failed to sell!

Bonnard 161

Lot 161, "Jeune fille assise," by Pierre Bonnard, oil on canvas,  23 1/8 by 16 1/2 inches, circa 1915

Lot 161 is an excellent oil on canvas of a young seated woman by Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947).  An oil on canvas, it measures 23 1/8 by 16 1/2 inches and was painted in 1915.  It has an estimate of $800,000 to $1,200,000.  It failed to sell.

Marquet  179

Lot 179, "Paris, quai de Louvre, soleil d'hiver," by Albert Marquet, oil on canvas, 25 1/4 by 31 7/8 inches, 1906

Lot 179 is an excellent Parisian scene by Albert Marquet (1875-1947) entitled "Paris, quai de Louvre, soleil d'hiver."  An oil on canvas, it measures 25 1/4 by 31 7/8 inches.  It was painted in 1906.  It appeared in several important exhibitions.  It has an estimate of $700,000 to $1,000,000.  It sold for $795,000.

Herbub 399


Lot 399, "Peupliers pres d'un lac," by Auguste Herbin, oil on panel, 19 3/4 by 25 3/8 inches, 1907

Lot 399 is a superb Fauve painting by Auguste Herbin (1882-1960) entitled "Peupliers pres d'un lac.'  An oil on panel, it measures 19 3/4 b 25 3/8 inches and was painted in 1907.  It has a modest estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.  It sold for $423,000.

Derain 181

Lot 181, "Paysage de l'Ile-de-France," by Andre Derain, oil on canvas, 15 7/8 by 21 1/4 inches, 1905


Lot 181, "Paysage de l'Ile-de-France," by Andre Derain (1880-1954) is a 1905 oil on canvas that measures 15 7/8 by 21 1/4 inches.  It has been widely exhibited and was included in "The Fauve Landscape" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1991.  It has a modest estimate of $350,000 to $450,000.  It sold for $591,000.

Monet 425

Lot 425, "La Maison a travers les roses," by Claude Monet, oil on canvas, 24 1/2 by 32 1/8 inches, 1926

Lot 425 is an excellent oil on canvas by Claude Monet (1840-1926) entitled "La Maison a travers les roses."  It measures 24 1/2 by 32 1/8 inches and was painted in 1926. 

The catalogue provides the following commentary:

"....these later compositions are remarkably daring.  The brushstrokes are heavily laden and equally applied across the surface of the canvas....The lasting legacy of Monet's late work is most clearly seen in the art of the Abstract Expressionists, such as Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Jackson Pollock and Sam Francis."

It has a modest estimate 800,000 to $1,200,000.  It sold for $1,035,000.

Sidaner 158

Lot 158, "La Table, Gerberoy," by Henri Le Sidaner, oil on canvas, 26 by 32 inches, 1917

Lot 158 is a nice garden scene by Henri Le Sidaner (1862-1939) entitled "La Table, Gerberoy."  An oil on canvas, it measures 26 by 32 inches and was painted in 1917.  It has an estimate of $700,000 to $900,000.  It failed to sell.
Loiseau 129

Lot 129, "Gelee blanche, rives de l'Eure, Saint Cyr du Vaudreuil," by Gustave Loiseau, oil on canvas, 23 3/4 by 32 inches

Lot 129 is a rather poetric winter landscape entitled "Gelee blance, rives de l"Eure, Saint Cyr du Vaudreuil, an oil on canvas by Gustave Loiseau (1865-1935)  that measures 23 3/4 by 32 inches.  It has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.  It sold for $435,000.

Lot 130, "Moret-sur-Loing," by Gustave Loiseau, oil on canvas, 25 3/4 by 36 1/4 inches

A good riverscape by Gustave Loiseau is Lot 130.  It is entitled "Moret-sur-Loing" and measures 25 3/4 by 36 1/4 inches.  It has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.  It failed to sell.

Sisley  156

Lot 156, "Le Barrage de la machine a Marly," by Alfred Sisley, oil on canvas, 15 by 24 1/4 inches, 1873

Lot 156 is a very pleasant riverscape by Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) that depicts a waterworks that was used to divert water from the Seine to Versailles.  The oil on canvas measures 15 by 24 1/4 inches and was painted in 1873.  It has an estimate of $350,000 to $450,000.  It failed to sell.


Miro 331

Lot 331, Figure, by Joan Miro, bronze, 13 1/4 inches high, numbered 1/6, 1981

Lot 331 is an amusting bronze figure by Joan Miro (193-1983) that is 13 1/4 inches high and is numbered 1/6 and was created in 1981. It has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.  It sold for $100,000.
 
Ernst 313

Lot 313, "La Parisienne," by Max Ernst, bronze, 30 7/8 inches high, 1950, numbered 1/9

Lot 313 is a fine bronze sculpture by Max Ernst (1891-1976)  that is entitled "La Parisienne."  It is 30 7/8 inches high and was maded in 1950 and is numbered 1/9.The lot has been widely exhibited.  It has an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.  It sold for $795,000.

Rockwarhsol 117

Lot 117, "Nelson Rockefeller," by Andy Warhol, acrylic and silkscreen ink on canvas, 75 by 56 inches, 1967

Lot 117 is a good portrait of Nelson Rockefeller by Andy Warhol.  An acrylic and silkscreen ink on canvas, it measures 75 by 56 inches.  It was painted in 1967,  It has an estimate of $800,000 to $1,200,000.  It failed to sell.
