When he worked on this painting, Derain, according to the catalogue, "was already experimenting with often tightly cropped compositions and novel viewpoints, taking this traditional Impressionist subject matter and depicting it in a radically new way."  "Like Vlaminck he worked with impulsive spontaneity, applying daubs and slabs of paint directly, using this to structure his compositons rather than traditional modes of perspective or tonal modelling."  Matisse visited the artists and was "stunned" by their work

The lot has an estimate of $3,000,000 to $5,000,000.  It sold for $4,715,000.

Gauguin

Lot 47A, "Les Oies," by Paul Gauguin, oil on canvas, 23 by 28 inches, 1889

Although the Cezanne and Mondrian are major works, some connoisseurs may be much more fascinated by a very dramatic work by Paul Gauguin, Lot 17, "Les Oies," which depicts three geese viewed by a woman who is only visible in her reflection in the water. This 23 -by-28 -inch oil on canvas, is exceeding vibrant and very unusual. Painted in 1889, it has an estimate at its auction in 2003 of $1,000,000 to $1,500,000. It sold for $1,127,500. At this auction, it has an estimate of $2,500,000 to $3,500,000.  It was passed at $1,700,000.  It is quite an astounding work that has the fiery colors of Nolde, the cosmic visions of Turner and the pyrotechnics of the Fauves.

This work, the 2003 catalogue maintains, "is one of the most haunting and abstract of Gauguin's entire career." "It was in Brittany that Gauguin finally broke free of earlier tradition and emerged as an intensely original modern master. With its unconventional viewpoint and brilliant swirls of anti-naturalistic color, the present painting vividly illustrates this development...."

This auction's catalogue provides the following commentary:

It has an estimate of $6,000,000 to $8,000,000.  It sold for $4,815,000.

The catalogue entry provides the following commentary:

"An imaginative writer and irrepressively free spirit, a 'new' woman living at the cutting edge of early 20th Century modernity, Beatrice Hastings  became the first and through the force of her remarkable personality, the most galvanizing and potently catalytic of the muses who presided over Modigliani's life and work.

"...Beatrice Hastings is the pen name that Emily Alice Beatrice Haigh, born in London, 1879, and raised in South Africa, assumed when she became a writer - and claimed to have once been married to a Cape Town prize fighter named Hastings.  In April, 1914 she arrived in Paris on assignment to author a column about the city for the influential London literary journal, The New Age, whose editor, A. R. Orage, had been her lover.  Beatrice soon became the subject of gossip among artists and writers in Montparnasse and Montmartre; Picasso's friend, the poet Max Jacob described her as "a great English poet - drunken, musical (a pianist), bohemian, elegant, dressed in the manner of the Transvaal and surrounded by a gang of bandits on the fringe of the arts....She was rumored to cut notches in the headboard of her bed to keep tally of her numerous occasional lovers."

de Lempcka

Lot 35A, "Les Jeunes Filles," by Tamara de Lempicka, oil on panel, 13 3/4 by 10 3/8 inches, 1930

Lot 351, "Les Jeunes Filles," is  a very fine, small oil on panel by Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980).  It measures 13 3/4 by 10 3/8 inches and was painted in 1930.  It was the cover illustration for the catalogue of her 2018 exhibition at the Palacio de Gaviria in Madrid.

It has stylized ribbon-like tresses and the upper right has a small stylized cityscape. It has an estimate of $2,000,000 to $3,000,000.  It sold for $5,269,000.
