"Child Playing" by Tamayo

The auction has several large paintings by Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991) and Matta (1911-2002) and some excellent works by Gunther Gerzso (1915-2000) and Alexander Xul Solar (1887-1963).

Lot 28, "Child Playing," is an oil and sand on canvas by Tamayo that measures 49 1/4 by 39 inches.  It was executed in 1945.  It has been consigned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which has been deaccessioning numerous works by Tamayo in recent years , and formerly was in the Bernard and Edith Lewin Collection of Mexican Art.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It failed to sell.  It has been widely exhibited.  

"Hombre de la cafetera" by Tamayo

Lot 63, "Hombre de la Cafetera," by Rufino Tamayo, oil and sand on canvas, 51 by 76 1/2 inches, 1960

Lot 63 is a large Tamayo oil and sand on canvas that is entitled"Hombre de la Cafetera."   Executed in 1960, it measures 51 by 76 1/2 inches.  It is also being sold by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.  It has an estimate of $350,000 to $450,000. It sold for $362,500 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article

The evening sale was quite successful with 66 of 81 lots selling for a total of $16,809,100 and five artist's records being broken.
"Figura de pie" by Tamayo

"Lot 51, "Figura de pie," by Rufino Tamayo, oil and sand on canvas, 51 1/8 by 38 1/4 inches, 1959

Lot 51 is a strong oil and sand on canvas by Tamayo that measures 51 1/8 by 38 1/4 inches.  Created in 1959, it is entitled "Figura de pie."  It has an estimate of $450,000 to $650,000.  It sold for $818,500.


"Hombre al sol" by Tamayo

Lot 52, "Hombre de sol," by Rufino Tamayo, oil and sand on  canvas, 39 3/8 by 31 3/4 inches, 1964

Lot 52 is a fine oil and sand on canvas by Tamayo that is also from the Lynch Family Collection.  Entitled "Hombre de sol," it measures 39 3/8 by 31 3/4 inches and was painted in 1964.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $400,000.  It sold for $302,500.

"Danzantes" by Tamayo


Lot 50, "Danzantes," by Rufino Tamayo, oil and sand on canvas, 38 1/8 by 51 1/4 inches, 1963

A third Tamayo from the Lynch Collection is Lot 50, "Danzantes," an oil and sand on canvas that measures 38 1/8 by 51 3/4 inches.  It was painted in 1963 and hasbeen widely exhibited and published.  It has an estimate of  $500,000 to $700,000. It sold for $746,500.

Lot 177, untitled, by Rufino Tamayo, oil and sand on canvas, 12 by 10 inches, 1972

Lot 177 is a small and simple but quite strong head of a man by Tamayo.  Untitled, it is an oil and sand on canvas that measures 12 by 10 inches and was painted in 1972.  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000. It sold for $104,500.

"Sobre la tumba de Justino" by Coronel

Lot 31, "Sobre la tumba de Justino," by Petro Coronel, oil on canvas, 78 7/8 by 94 1/2 inches, 1974

Although its style is much more hard-edged and detailed than Rufino Tamayo's, Lot 31, "Sobre la tumba de Justino," by Pedro Coronel (1923-1985) shows Tamayo's great influence.  This is a very impressive oil on canvas that measures 78 7/8 by 94 1/2 inches.  It was painted in 1974.  It pays tribute to Justino Fernandez, a leading art historian andcritic.  It has an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.  It sold for $302,500.


"Paisaje de Papantla" by Gerzso

Lot 24, "Paisaje de Papantla," by Gunther Gerzso, oil on masonite 39 1/2 by 28 3/4 inches, 1955

The cover illustration of this auction's catalogue isLot 24,"Paisaje de Papantla," a very handsome abstraction by Gunther Gerzso (1915-2000).  An oil on masonite, it measures 39 1/2 by 28 3/4 inches and was executed in 1955.  With its muted and limited palette, this very original, layered abstraction is one of the artist's finest.

The catalogue provides the following commentary:

"Drawing inspiration from the rich textures and colors of his native land, Gerzso's abstractions penetratingly channel the spiritual state and psychic imagination of the Mexican landscape....The surreal qualities of the land permeates the pictorial space of Paisaje de Papantla, which evocatively re-imagines the archaic forms of the Totonacanapan settlements in modern-day Veracruz."

The lot has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It failed to sell.

"Azul-verde-blanco-naranja" by Gerzso

Lot 205, "Azul-verde-blanco-naranja," is a more typical Gerzso.  It is an oil and sand on masonite that measures 25 1/4 by 30 inches.  It was painted in 1984.  It has a modest estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $122,500.

"Paisaje: Semejanza mia" by Gerzso

Another very fine, "conventional" Gerzso is Lot 66, "Paisaje: Semejanza mia."  An oil and sand on canvas, it measures 26 7/8 by 36 3/8 inches and was painted in 1986.  It is very nicely framed and has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,00. It sold for $170,500.

The auction has two other excellent, atypical Gerzsos, Lot 199, "Paisaje," a 1958 oil on cardboard that measures 22 1/2 by 16 inches and has an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000, and Lot 202, "Elevsis II," a 1961 oil on masonite that measures 20 by 15 inches and also has an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.  Both are very interesting, spartan abstractions.  Lot 199 did not sell.  Lot 202 sold for $40,000.

"Palaeoxora" by Fonseca

One of the most interesting and impressive works in the auction is Lot 64, a painted and incised cement relief by Gonzalo Fonseca (I1922-1997) entitled "Palaeoxora."  It measures 25 1/4 by 32 3/4 by 2 1/8 inches and was executed in 1961.  It has a modest estimate of $40,000 to $60,000. It sold for $62,500.


"La estacion III" by Morales

Lot 60 is a very large and very fine oil and beeswax on canvas by Armando Morales (b. 1927) entitled "La estacion III."  It measures 63 3/4 by 79 inches and was painted in 1984.  It has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000. It sold for $200,500.


"Selva" by Morales

Lot 47 is a marvelous dense forest scene by Armando Morales entitled "Selva."  An oil and beeswax on canvas, it measures 63 3/4 by 79 inches and was painted in 1986.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $400,000. It sold for $422,500.

Untitled by Matta

Lot 41 is a spectacular and great untitled oil on canvas by Matta (1911-2002).  It measures 65 1/4 by 131 3/4 inches.  It has a modest estimate of $250,000 to $350,000. It sold for $429,700.

Another very large work by Matta is Lot 68, an untitled oil and sand on burlap that measures 70 3/4 by 117 1/4 inches.  It was executed circa 1960.  It is a monumental and extremely strong work that is atypical in that its palette is dark and rich rather than diaphonous and pscyhedelic.  It has a conservative estimate of $250,000 to $350,000. It sold for $422,500.

"Basurero" by Sanchez

Lot 62, "Basurero," is a large acrylic on canvas by Tomas Sanchez (b. 1948) that is a very impressive vista of a trash site.  It measures 43 by 58 7/8 inches and was painted in 1991.  It has a conservative estimate of $150,000 to $200,000. It sold for $182,500.

"El gato" by Carrington

Lot 26 is a good oil on canvas by Leonore Carrington (b. 1917) entitled "El gato."  It measures 32 by 40 inches and was painted in 1951.  It has an estimate of $150,000 to $200,000.  It sold for $194,500.

"Survivor" by Kahlo

Lot 27, "Survivor," by Frida Kahlo, 6 5/8 by 4 3/4 inches, 1938

Lot 27 is a very small oil on metal framed by the artist in a handcrafted Oaxacan tin frame by Frida Kahlo (1907-1954).  Entitled "Survivor," the painting measures 6 5/8 by 4 3/4 inches and the lovely frame measures 16 3/4 by 14 3/4 inches.  The painting was created in 1938.  The painting depicts a Coilima warrior figure.  It has a modest estimate of $100,000 to $150,000.  It sold for $1,178,500.

"Composicion construtiva en planos y figuras" by Torres-Garcia

One of the auction's highlights is a classic oil on canvas by Joaquin Torres-Garcia (1874-1949) entitled "Composicion constructiva en planos y figuras."  It measures 23 1/2 by 19 inches and was painted in 1931.  It has an estimate of $800,000 to $1,200,000.  It sold for $866,500.

Lot 14 is a very bright and colorful colored crayon on paper by Candido Portinari (1903-1962) entitled "Menina com Trancas e Lacos."  It measures 17 7/8 by 12 3/4 inches and was drawn in 1956.  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $74,500.

"Untitled" by Mabe

Lot 244 is an untitled abstraction by Manabu Mabe (1924-1997) that  is 20 inches square and was created in 1979.  It is quite bold and extremely detailed for an abstraction.  It has an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000.

Lot 267 is a very beautiful untitled watercolor and gouache on paper by Antonio Bandeira (1923-1967).  It measures 9 7/8 by 9 3/8 inches and was painted in 1958.  It has an estimate of $12,000 to $18,000.  It failed to sell.

"Rainy Day" by Merida

Lot 194 is a fabulous abstraction by Carlos Merida (1891-1984).  It was painted in 1943 and harkens to the aesthetics of Theodore Stamos, William Baziotes and Adolph Gottlieb.  An oil on canvasboard, it measures 29 3/4 by 24 3/4 inches.  It is entitled "Rainy Day."  It has a modest estimate of $30,000 to $40,000.  It sold for $21,250.

"Muros" by Solar

One of the most beautiful works in the auction is Lot 42, "Muros," by Alejandro Xul Solar (1887-1963).  A tempera on paper, it is entitled "Muros" and measures 13 1/2 by 19 5/8 inches.  It was painted in 1944.  It has an estimate of $70,000 to $90,000. It failed to sell.

"Cine-Teatro" by Xul Solar

Another less abstract but more colorful work by Xul Solar is Lot 225, "Cine-Teatro," a watercolor that measures 6 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches.  It was created in 1926 and has an estimate of  $50,000 to $70,000.  It failed to sell.

It sold for $1,046,500.
