"Jeune Fille Assise," by Georges Valmier, oil on canvas, 28 7/8 by 21

One
of the finest works in the auction is Lot 309, a terrific painting of a
seated young girl by Georges Valmier (1885-1937). An oil on
canvas, it measures 28 7/8 iby 21 1/4 inches and was painted in 1919.
It has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000. It sold for $542,500. Valmier's
Cubist works departed from those of Picasso and Braque in his bold use
of color. The catalogue notes that this work "combines the
polychromatic harmony and masterful synthetism of the artist's
strongest works."
"He brings the female figure to the brink of abstraction but still
allows for a reading of her position in the space of the composition.
He employs a brilliant confluence of different patterns and
textures, including passage referencing the early Cubism of Picasso and
Braque and stippling borrowed from the Neo-Impressionists
to create an entirely unique idioimatic expression. Jeune Fille Assise is
emblematic of both the artist's ideology and the movement of
Cubism in its entirety," the entry continued.
