Lot 11, "Man Going to Work," by Fernando Botero, oil on canvas, 20 by 25 inches, 1969

The May 28, 2014 Latin American Art auction at Christie's New York is highlighted by several good works by Botero, an excellent Torres-Garcia, a fine Siqueiros, a good Tamayo, an impressive Reveron self-portrait, an amusing Iturria, an exquisite de Amaral, and a jaunty Figari.

The sale total was $17,614,500 with 76 percent of the 245 offered lots selling.

The back-cover lot of the catalogue was Lot 11, "Man Going to Work," by Fernando Botero (b. 1932), shown at the top of this article.  An oil on canvas, it measures 74 inches square and was executed in 1969.  It has been widely published.  It has an estimate of $1,200,000 to $1,800,000.
 It sold for $1,445,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

Botero equestrian

Lot 30, "Man on a Horse," by Fernando Botero, oil on canvas, 17 1/2 by 13 1/2 inches, 2002

Lot 30 is a small oil on canvas by Botero of a "Man on a horse."  It measures 17 1/2 by 13 1/2 inches and was painted in 2002.  It has an estimate of $150,000 to $200,000.  It sold for $221,000.

Lot 155, "Picador," by Fernando Botero, oil on canvas, 60 by 48 1/2 inches, 2005

Lot 155, "Picador," is an oil on canvas by Botero that measures 60 by 48 1/2 inches and was painted in 2005.  It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It failed to sell.

Lot 154, "Anna," by Fernando Botero, watercolor on paper, 14 7/8 by 12 inches, 1973

Lot 154 is a charming watercolor on paper by Botero entitled "Anna."  It measures 14 7/8 by 12 inches and was created in 1973.  It has an estimate of $30,000 to $40,000.  It sold for $47,500.

Lot 153, "Devil," by Fernando Botero, sepia and ink on paper, 9 1/4 by 8 inches, 1971

Lot 153 is an amusing sepia and ink on paper of "Devil" holding a devil doll by Botero.  It measures 9 1/4by 8 inches and was drawn in 1971.  It has a modest estimate of $12,000 to $18,000.  It failed to sell.


Reveron

Lot 75, "Autoretrato con pumpa," by Armando Reveron, pastel and chalk on paper laid down on wood, 24 3/4 by 19 inches, 1947

Lot 75 is a good pastel and chalk self-portraint on paper laid down on wood by Armando Reveron (1889-1954).  It measures 24 3/4 by 19 inches and was painted in 1947.  It has an estimate of $120,000 to $180,000.  It failed to sell.

Tamayo

Lot 102, "The Frog," by Rufino Tamayo, oil and sand on canvas, 23 3/8 by 20 inches, 1946

Lot 102 is a good oil and sand on canvas by Rufino Tamayo ()1899-1991) entitled "The Frog."  It measures 23 38 by 20 inches and was painted in 1946.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It sold for $605,000.

Lot 148 is another Tamayo entitled "Dialogue" that was being sold by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which has been deaccessioning many Tamayos in recent years.  This oil and marble dust on canvas meausres 51 1/2 by 75 inches and was painted in 1974.  It had been widely published and exhibited and had an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It sold for $845,000.

Torres-Garcia maze

Lot 56, "Composition TSF," by Joaquin Torres-Garcia, oil on canvas, 36 1/8 by 23 1/2 inches, 1931

The cover illustration of the auction catalogue is Lot 56, "Composition TSF," by Joaquin Torres-Garcia (1874-1949).  An oil on canvas, it measures 36 1/8 by 23 1/2 inches and was executed in 1931.  The artist's pictographs and grids became "a new paradigm for Latin American abstraction," according to the catalogue.  The lot has an estimate of $1,000,000 to $1,500,000.  It sold for $1,565,000.


Torres-garcia small


Lot 60, "Barcos metafisicos sobre fondo verde," by Joaquin Torres-Garcia, oil on cardboard, 16 3/4 by 20 inches, 1943

Another work by Torres-Garcia is Lot 60, "Barcos metafisico sobre fondo verde," an oil on cardboard that measures 16 3/4 by 20 inches.  It was painted in 1943 and was  been widely published and exhibited.  It has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000. It sold for $118,500.

Lam 1

Lot 192, "Untitled," by Wilfredo Lam, oil on canvas, 51 3/4 by 44 inches, 1964

Lot 192 is a good untitled abstract oil on canvas by Wilfredo Lam (1902-1982).  It measures 51 3/4 by 44 inches and was painted in 1964.  It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It failed to sell.


Lam 2

Another good oil on canvas by Lam is Lot 50.  An untitled work from 1970, it measures 25 3/4 by 21 3/8 inches.  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $106,250.


Atchugarry2

Lot 189, untitled, by Pablo Atchugarry, white Carrara marble with granite base, 58 1/2 inches high, 2012

Lot 189 is a very fine, untitled, white Carrara marble abstract sculpture by Pablo Atchugarry (b. 1954).  It is 58 1/2 inches high and was created in 2012.  It has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.  It sold for $106,500.


Atchugarry

Lot 26, "Untitled," by Pablo Atchugarry, white Carrara marble, 22 by 15 by 12 inches, 2012

Lot 26 is another good sculpture by Atchugarry, this time a bit more curved.  The untitled white Carrara marble statue measures 22 by 15 by 12 inches and was created in 2012.  It has an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.  It sold for $52,500.


Carrington


Lot 121, "The Hunt," by Leonora Carrington, oil and tempera on canvas, 15 by 39 3/8 inches, 1962

Lot 121 is an oil and tempera on canvas by Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) entitled "The Hunt."  It measures  15 by 39 3/8 inches and was painted in 1962.  It has an estimate of $120,000 to $180,000.  It sold for $173,000.

Lot 34 is a good untitled oil on canvas by Ignaccio Iturria (b. 1949).  It measures 28 by 36 inches and was painted in 1996.  It has an estimate of $18,000 to $22,000.  It sold for $27,500.

Lot 23 is a large and beautiful work by Olga de Amaral (b. 1932) on linen, silk and goldleaf that was made in 1992 and is entitled  "Cesta  Lunar 016."

Matta

Lot 53, "Le mouse," by Matta oil on  paper laid down on canvas, 19 1/4 by 35 1/8 inches

Lot 53 is tonally unusual work by Matta (1911-2002) entitled "Le mouse."  An oil on paper laid down on canvas, the brownish painting measures 19 1/4 by 35 1/8 inches.  It has an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.  It failed to sell.


Meijguinand

Lot 225, "Palindromo incesto,"by Tunga, 28 1/2 by 82 3/4 by 50 7/8 inches, 1992-2002

One of the more intriguing sculptures in the auction is Lot 225, "Palindromo incesto,"by Tunga (b. 1952),  It measures 28 1/2 by 82 3/4 by 50 7/8 inches and was created 1992-2002.  It relates to a Nordic myth about Siamese twins who were joined by hair and sacrificed at puberty and the scavenged scalp was taken as a trophy by a woman who embroidered an image and the hair turned to metal and then gold, according to the catalogue.  It has an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.  It sold for $149,000.



Ferrari
