Simon Shaw and David Norman at
post-auction new conference
At
the post-sale news conference, David Norman, co-chair of the
department, said that Asian buyers were quite active and are now
"really a critical part of the market," adding that not only did three
of them bid successfully on major works but they and others were
underbidders on several more.
Auctioneer Henry Wyndham at news
conference
The
auction was conducted with great confidence, flair and humor by Henry
Wyndham, the head of Sotheby's in Europe whose
6-foot-6-and-a-half-inch height enabled him to survey the assembled
bidders with aplomb and authority. "The first two-thirds of
the
sale was exciting and incredible, but the whole auction was long and
it's time to run a nice, long bath," he opined.Tobias Mayer, the auction house's
former head auctioneer, resigned last fall. Sotheby's has
been under considerable pressure from Daniel S. Loeb, a hedge fund
manager, over control of its board and the morning of this auction it
announced that it has agreed the day before to give him and two allies
the board seats they ha been seeking and to let his firm increase its
ownership stake to 15 percent.
