The May 28, 2014 Latin American Art auction at Sotheby's New York is highlighted by a very fine Cubist painting by Diego Rivera, an excellent abstraction by Joaquin Torres-Garcia, a couple of fine paintings by Rufino Tamayo and very good works by David Alfaro Siquieros, Jorge de la Vega, Armando Reveron, Marcelo Bonevadi, Pedro Coronel, Yvone Domenge, Rodolfo Nieto and Mira Schendel.

The sale total was $18,700,875.

Lot 41, shown above, is a very strong and fine small Cubist oil on canvas by Diego Rivera (1886-1957) entitled "Naturaleza muerta con limones."  It measures 11 1/4 by 15 inches and was painted in 1926.  It has a modest estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It sold for $941,000.

Torres-Garcia

Lot 20, "Grafismo infinito," by Joaquin Torres-Garcia, oil on cardboard mounted on wood, 21 1/4 by 33 1/4 inches, 1937

Lot 20 is an excellent oil on cardboard mounted on wood by Joaquin Torres-Garcia (1874-1949) entitled "Grafismo infinito."  It measures 21 1/4 by 33 1/4 inches and was painted in 1937.  It has an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.  It sold for $1,025,000.

Red Torres-Garcia

Lot 26, "Ciatro figuras y carrito a cinco tonos," by Joaquin Torres-Garcia, oil on board mounted on panel, 19 1/4 by 26 1/2 inches, 1946

Lot 26 is a good abstract oil on board mounted on panel by Torres-Garcia.  It is entitled "Ciatro figuras y carruto a cinco tonos.  It measures 19 1/4 by 26 1/2 inches and was painted in 1946.  It has an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.  It sold for $341,000.

Matta

Lot 24, "Morphologie Pyschologique," by Matta, oil on canvas, 29 by 36 inches, 1939

Lot 24 is a major abstract oil on canvas by Matta (1912-2002) entitled "Morphologie Pscyhologique."  It measures 29 by 36 inches and was painted in 1939.  It has an estimate of $2,500,000 to $3,500,000.  It failed to sell.

Yellow Matta

Lot 167, "Untitled,"by Matta, mixed media on board, 42 7/8 by 47 7/8 inches, crica 1970

Lot 167 is an untitled mixed media on board by Matta that measures 42 7/8 by 47 7/8 inches.  It was painted circa 1970.  It has an estimate of $18,000 to $22,000. It sold for $43,750.

De La Vega

Lot 51, "La Pata roja," by Jorge de la Vega, oil and mixed media collage on canvas, 31 5/8 by 39 1/4 inches, 1964

Lot 51 is a striking oil and mixed media collage on canvas by Jore de la Vega (1930-1971).  Entitled "La Pata roja," it measures 31 5/8 by 39 1/4 inches.

It was painted in 1964.  It has an estimate of $225,000 to $275,000.  It sold for $377,000.

Marcaccio
