The May 15, 2015 Impressionist and Modern Art Works on Paper auction including Property from the John C. Whitehead Collection at Christie's New York is highlighted by major works by Gustave Loiseau, Paul Serusier, Edouard Vuillard, Henri Matisse, Auguste Herbin, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Manet, Tamara de Lempicka, Emil Nolde, and Roger de la Fresnaye.

Lot 1002 is a lovely oil on canvas by Gustav Loiseau (1865-1935) entitled "Le Quatorze, Julliet à Paris."  It measures 21 3/8 by 18 inches and was painted circa 1925.  It is from the Whitehead Collection.  It has a modest estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.  It sold for $353,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The auction sales total was $24,884.625 with 71.6 percent of the 183 offered lots selling.


Pissaro

Lot 1303, "Paysage à Pontoise," by Camille Pissarro, oil on canvas, 16 1/8 by 13 inches, circa 1879

Lot 1303 is a small but exquisite oil on canvas by Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) entitled "Paysage à Pontoise."  It measures 16 1/8 by 13 inches and was painted circa 1879.  It has a modest estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It sold for $905,000.


Nolde

Lot 1140, "Sommerblumen," by Emil Nolde, watercolor on Japan paper, 10 3/4 by 8 7/8 inches, circa 1945-1950

Lot 1140, "Sommerblumen," is a classic and very colorful watercolor on Japan paper by Emil Nolde (1867-1956).  It measures 10 3/4 by 8 7/8 inches and was painted circa 1945-1950.  It has an estimate of $70,000 to $100,000.  It sold for $68,750.


Manet

Lot 1006, "Quatre Personnages au Theatre," by Edouard Manet, brush and India ink on paper, 5 by 7 1/8 inches, 1880

Lot 1006 is a good brush and India ink on paper drawing by Edouard Manet (1832-1883) entitled "Quatre Personnages au Theatre."  It measures 5 by 7 1/8 inches and was drawn in 1880.  It is from the Whitehead Collection.  It has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.  It sold for $100,000.


de la Fresnaye

Lot 1049, "La Cheinée d'Usine," by Roger de la Fresnaye," oil on canvas, 23 5/8 by 28 3/4 inches, 1912

Lot 1049 is a strong and handsome oil on canvas by Roger de la Fresnaye (1885-1925) entitled "La Cheinée d'Usine."  It measures 23 5/8 by 28 3/4 inches and was painted in 1912.  It was once owned by John Quinn of New York and was acquired on behalf of John C. Whitehead for Achim Moeller.  It has an estimate of $250,000 to $450,000.  It sold for $317,000.

Serusier

Lot 1035, "Les Deux Lavandieres au Bord de la Cascade," by Paul Serusier, oil on canvas, 28 7/8 by 36 1/2 inches, circa 1890

The most beautiful painting in the auction is Lot 1035, "Les Deux Lavandieres au Bord de la Cascade," by Paul Serusier (1863-1927).  An oil on canvas, it measures 28 7/8 by 36 1/2 inches and was painted circa 1890.

It has an estimate of $500,000 to $800,000.  It sold for $1,325,000.


Bonnard

Lot 1014, "Paysage Stylise (Le Grand-Lemps)," by Pierre Bonnard, oil, charcoal and pen and black ink on canvas, 13 3/4 by 9 1/2 inches, circa 1890

Lot 1014 is a nice oil, charcoal and pen and black ink on canvas by Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947).  Entitled "Paysage Stylise (Le Grand-Lemps)," it measures 13 3/4 by 9 1/2 inches and was painted circa 1890.  It has an estiamte of $200,000 to $300,000.  It sold for $401,000.  It once belonged to Mrs. Edward G. Robinson and is from the Whitehead Collection.

Martin

Lot 1306, "Paysage," by Henri Martin, oil on canvas, 33 by 26 3/4 inches

Lot 1306 is an excellent oil on canvas by Henri Martin (1860-1943).  The landscape measures 33 by 26 3/4 inches.  It has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.  It sold for $137,500.


Herbin

Lot 1045, "Le Matin, Corse," by Auguste Herbin, oil on canvas, 18 1/4 by 21 3/4 inches, 1907

Lot 1045 is a very strong oil on canvas by Auguste Herbin (1882-1960) entitled "Le Matin, Corse."  It measures 18 1/4 by 21 3/4 inches and was painted in 1907.  It is property of the Whitehead Collection.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.  It sold for $725,000.


Vuillard

Lot 1036, "Madeleine Descorps et Son Fils Bernard au Jardin," by Edouard Vuillard, peinture à colle on paper laid down on canvas, 39 by 26 inches, 1919-1920

Lot 1036 is a very fine painting by Edouard Vuillard entitled "Madeleine Descorps et Son Fils Bernard au Jardin."  A peinture à colle on paper laid down on canvas, it measures 39 by 26 inches and was painted in 1919-1920.  It once belonged to Albert D. Lasker of New York and was acquired for John Whitehead in 1987 by Achim Moeller. It has an estiate of $200,000 to $400,000.  It sold for only $125,000.


Matisse

Lot 1044, "Bateaux à Collioure," by Henri Matisse, watercolor on paper, 6 by 9 7/8 inches, 1905

Lot 1044 is a small but very lovely watercolor on paper by Henri Matisse (1869-1965) entitled "Bateaux à Collioure."  It measures 6 by 9 7/8 inches and was painted in 1905.  It is property from the Whitehead Collection.  It has an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.  It sold for $233,000.


Severini

Lot 1222, "Nature morte," by Gino Severini," oil on board, 18 1/8 by 14 7/8 inches, 1918

Lot 1222 is a wonderful still life by Gino Severini (1883-1966) that measures 18 1/8 by 14 7/8 inches.  It was painted in 1918.  It is the cover illustration for the auction's catalogue.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $400,000.  It sold for $365,000.

Tamara blue

Lot 1368, "L'Ocean," by Tamara de Lempicka," oil on canvas, 31 7/8 by 51 1/8 inches, 1963

Lot 1368 is a large oil on canvas by Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980) entitled "L'Ocean."  It measures 31 7/8 by 51 1/8 inches and was painted in 1963. It has an estinate of $40,000 to $60,000.  It sold for $87,500.


Kupka

Lot 1142 is a small but very strong gouache and watercolor over pencil on paper by Frantisek Kupka.  Entitled "Ardeur," it measures 8 1/4 by 8 1/8 inches was painted in 1918-9.  It has a modest estimate of $18,000 to $25,000.  It sold for $50,000.
