The Spring 2016 Latin American Art auctions at Christie's New York are very fine works by Matta, Tamayo, Botero, and Lam and very good works by Nieto, Rivera, Morales, de Amaral and Martinez.

Lot 100 is a very strong painting by Matta (1911-2002) that is untitled and measures 48 by 96 inches.  It was painted in 1966 and is property of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.  It has an estimate of $70,000 to $90,000.

It has an estimate of $70,000 to $90,000.  It sold for $143,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The sale total was $19,145,750.



Matta grey

Lot 32, "Ecce fuma," by Matta, oil on canvas, 69 1/4 by 82 5/8 inches, 1973

Another Matta is Lot 32, "Ecce fuma," an oil on canvas that measures 69 1/4 by 82 5/8 inches.  It was painted in 1973.  It has an estimate of $180,000 to $220,000.  It failed to sell.


Tamayo cover

Lot 18, "Maestros cantores," by Rufino Tamayo, oil on canvas, 33 1/2 by 27 5/8 inches, 1949

The cover illustration of the catalogue for this auction is Lot 18, "Maestros cantories," by Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991).  An oil on canvas, it measures 33 1/2 by 27 5/8 inches and was painted in 1949.  It has been widely exhibited and published.  It has an estimate of $2,000,000 to $3,000,000.  It sold for $2,165,000.

Lot 22, "Bienvenida," by Rufino Tamayo, oil and sand on canvas, 76 1/4 by 51 inches, 1977

Lot 22 is an oil and sand on canvas by Tamayo entitled "Bienvenida."  It measures 76 1/4 by 51 inches and was painted in 1977.  It is property from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. which has incredibly been deaccessioning fine works by Tamayo for several years.  It has been widely published and exhibited.  It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It sold for $545,000.

Lot 31 is a very good abstract oil on canvas by Tamayo that is entitled "Man in a Landscape."  An oil on canvas, it measures 32 by 39 1/4 inches.  It was painted in 1961.  It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It sold for $485,000.


Rivera

Lot 11, "Nina con rebozo," by Diego Rivera, oil on canvas, 32 1/4 25 1/8 inches, 1938

Lot 11 is a fine oil on canvas by Diego Rivera (1886-1957) entitled "Nina con rebozo."  It measures 32 1/4 by 25 1/8 inches and was painted in 1938.  It is property from the collection of Maria and Placido Domingo.  It is the rear cover illustration of the auction's catalogue.  It has an estimate of $1,000,000 to $1,500,000.  It sold for $1,205,000.


Nieto 136

Lot 136 is a very striking untitled abstract oil on canvas by Rodolfo Nieto (1936-1985).  It measures 39 by 31 1/2 inches and was painted in 1965.  It has a modest estimate of $12,000 to $18,000.  It sold for $40,000.

Lot 33 is a very good abstraction by Wilfredo Lam (1902-1982) entitled "Le Sabbat (Immagine No. 5)."  An oil on canvas, it measures 41 3/8 by 51 1/8 inches and was painted in 1964.  It has been widely exhibited and published.  It has an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.  It sold for $785,000.


Lam pink

Lot 94, "Personnage," by Wilfredo Lam, oil on canvas, 18 1/8 by 15 inches, 1972

Another Lam is Lot 95, "Personnage," an oil on canvas that measures 18 1/8 by 15 inches.  It was painted in 1972.  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $68,750.

Lot 36, "Seated Woman," by Fernando Botero, bronze, 84 inches high, number 3/3, conceived in 2002 and cast in 2004

Lot 36 which was exhibited at the entrance to the auction house is Lot 36, "Seated Woman," by Fernando Botero (b. 1932).  The bronze is 84 inches high and is numbered 3/3.  It was conceived in 2002 and cast two years later.  It is from the Wynn Las Vegas Collection. It has an estimate of $700,000 to $900,000.  It sold $725,00.

Lot 50, "Reclining figure," by Fernando Botero, bronze, 54 inches long, number 1 of 3, 1985

Lot 50 is a fine bronze of a reclining nude woman by Fernando Botero.  It is 54 inches long and is numbered 1 of 3.  It was created in 1985.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It sold for $545,000.

Lot 40, "Rape of Europa," by Fernando Botero, bronze, 40 inches long, number 3 of 6, 2006

Another good Botero bronze is Lot 40, Rape of Europa."  It is 40 inches long and numbered 3 of 6.  It was created in 2006.  It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It sold for $629,000.


Amaral

Lots 59 and 60, "Moon Basket 49," and "Moon Basket 50," by Olga de Amaral, linen with silver and gold leaf, 276 1/2 by 88 inches, 1991

Lots 59 and 60, shimmering works on linen with silver and gold leaf by Olga de Amaral, were exhibited in the great staircase hall of Christie's New York.  They each measure 276 1/2 by 88 inches and were created in 1991.  The one of the left is entitled "Moon Basket 49" and the other is entitled "Moon Basket 50."  They each have an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000.  Lot 49 sold for $125,000.  Lot 50 sold for $100,000.


Bonevardi197

Lot 197 is a very impressive work by Marcelo Bonevardi (1929-1994) entitled "Talismanic Object (No. 468)."  It measures69 by 47 3/4 by 5 inches and was created in 1975.  It has a modest estimate of $12,000 to $18,000.  It sold for $11,875.


Boto 204

Lot 204 is a very lyrical and lovely painted oil on wood sculpture in two parts by Martha Boto (1925-2004).  It measures 21 1/2 by 18 inches.  It has an estimate of $12,000 to $18,000.  It sold for $12,500.

One of the auction's handsomest works is Lot 217, a two-part untitled sculpture by Angelo Venosa (b. 1954).  It was created in 2012.  It has an estimate of $30,000 to $40,000.  It failed to sell.

Diago 237
