The May 18, 2017 Contemporary Art Evening Auction at Sotheby's New York is highlighted by several fine works by Basquiat, Richter, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Twombly, Rauschenberg, and Hockney.

It was a very succesful auction with 96 percent of the 50 offered lots selling for $319,000,000 including $110,487,500 paid for a large painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), a record for the artist at auction and for any American artist, and it was the first work created since 1980 to make more than $100,000,000.  It last appeared on the market in 1984 when it sold for $19,000.  The auction had a low estimate of $211,000,000.  The lot was bought by Yusaku Maezsawa, who last year paid $57,300,000 for a painting of a horned devil at Christie's, which then set a record for the artist.  Mr. Maezsawa, who is 41 years old, is the founder of Zozotown, Japan's large online fashion mall,  and the Contemporary Art Foundation in his hometown, Chiba, Japan.

Lot 6 is a triptych on paper by Cy Twombly 1928-2011) entitled "Silex Scintillans."  The largest is 58 3/4 by 50 inches and the lot was created in 1981.

The catalogue entry provides the following commentary:

"An effulgent tempest of inspired visual lyricism and explosive gestural bravura..., [it] powerfully articulates the full force of Twombly's extraordinary abstract lexicon.  Titled after and inspired by Welsh poet Henry Vaughan's text Silex Scintillans, a body of devotional poetry published in 1650, Silex Scintillans exemplifies the increasingly romantic, pastoral sensibilitiy of Twomby's output in the early 1980s.  While the artist's overall oeuvre is defined by the remarkable reconciliation of text, gesture, and form, the concomitance of these signifiers in the scarlet and pastel hues of Silex Scintallans achieves an unprecedented level of visual poetry."

Fine writing, of course, but balderdash!  It ain't beautiful!

The lot has an estimate of $5,000,000 to $7,000,000.  It sold for $8,337,500.
