Klee 382

The afternoon auction May 16, 2018 of Impressionist & Modern Art Day Sale at Christie's New York is highlighted by very good works by Paul Klee, Gustave Loiseau, Rudolf Bauer, and Edouard Vuillard.

Lot 382 is a superb oil on canvas by Paul Klee (1879-1940) entitled "Versprengter Reiter." It measures 20 7/8 by 16 inches and was painted in 1929. It was once owned by Elmer Rice and Judith Riklis and was included in the Klee exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1930. It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000. It sold for $1,332,500 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The auction total was $27,404,625 with 86 percent of the 160 offered lots selling.

Lot 355, "Brume sur l'Eure, environs de Saint-Cyr-du-Vaudreuil," by Gustave Loiseau, oil on canvas, 28 3/4 by 36 3/8 inches, 1913

Lot 355 is a superb Impressionist oil on canvas by Gustave Loiseau (1865-1935). It could easily pass as a fine Monet. It measures 28 3/4 by 36 3/8 inches and was painted in 1913. It is entitled "Brume sur l'Eure, environs de Saint-Cyr-du-Vaudreuil." It has an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000. It sold for $225,000.

Lot 373, "Contrast," by Rudolf Bauer, oil on canvas, 36 5/8 by 29 inches, 1924

Lot 373 is a very fine abstract composition entitled "Contrast" by Rudolf Bauer (1889-1953). An oil on canvas, it measures 36 5/8 by 29 inches and was painted in 1924. It was once owned by Solomon R. Guggenheim who acquired it and about 300 other works directly from the artist. It has an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000. It failed to sell.

Lot 349, "La Plage du Havre," by Raoul Dufy, oil on canvas, 25 5/8 by 32 inches, 1906

Lot 349 is an excellent beach scene at Havre by Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) that is an oil on canvas that measures 25 5/8 by 32 inches and was painted in 1906. It is property from the collection of Dr. and Mrs. Jerome S. Coles. It is notable for having quite a strong palette. It has an estimate of $700,000 to $900,000. It sold for $792,500.

Lot 416, "Lili Lamy en tailleur noir et cravate verte," by Edouard Vuillard, oil on board laid down on masonite, 28 7/8 by 27 1/2 inches, 1916

Lot 416 is an excellent oil on board laid down on masonite by Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940) entitled "Lili Lamy en tailleur noir et cravate verte." It measures 28 7/8 by 27 1/2 inches and was painted in 1916. It was once owned by Larry and Wynn Aldrich of New York. It has a modest estimate of $100,000 to $150,000. It sold for $100,000.

Lot 413, "Peupliers au printemps au bord du Vert," by Henri Martin, oil on canvas, 41 by 90 1/4 inches

Lot 413, "Peupliers au printemps au bord du Vert," is a large and very luminous oil on canvas by Henri Martin (1860-1943). It measures 41 by 90 1/4 inches. It has an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000. It sold for $600,500.

Lot 345, "Jeune fille nue," by Henri Martin, oil on canvas, 51 5/8 by 31 3/4 inches

Lot 345 is a masterful and very lovely oil on canvas of a nude woman by Martin. It measures 51 5/8 by 31 3/4 inches. It has a modest estimate of $70,000 to $100,000. It sold for $68,750.

Lot 354, "Marée basse, Rivage et pecheurs au coucher du soleil," by Eugene Boudin, oil on panel, 6 7/8 by 9 7/8 inches, 1862

Lot 354 is a superb Impressionist beach scene at sunset with fisherman by Eugene Boudin (1824-1898). An oil on panel, it measures 6 7/8 by 9 7/8 inches and was painted in 1862. It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000. It sold for $187,500.

Lot 330, "Les dunes a Etaples," by Eugene Boudin, oil on canvas, 14 1/4 by 23 1/8 inches, 1890

Lot 330 is a more conventional and fine Boudin seascape entitled "Les dunes a Etaples." An oil on canvas, it measures 14 1/4 by 23 1/8 inches and was painted in 1890. It has an estimate of $120,000 to $180,000. It sold for $137,500.

Lot 311, "Woman with Fan," by Alexander Archipenko, polychromed bronze relief, numbered 3/8, 35 5/8 by 18 1/2 inches, 1914

Lot 311 is an impressive polychromed bronze relief by Alexander Archipenko (1887-1964) entitled "Woman with Fan." It is numbered 3/8 and measures 35 5/8 by 18 1/2 inches and is dated 1914. It has an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000. It sold for $324,500.
