The morning auction of Impressionist & Modern Art May 15, 2018 at Sotheby's New York is highlighted by a nice works by Loiseau, Herbin, Derain, Gonzales, Braque. Pissarro, Nolde, Picabia, Matta and Chagall.

Lot 106 is a lovely beach scene by Gustave Loiseau (1865-1935) entitled "Falaises de Saint-Jouin."  An oil on canvas, it measures 25 5/8 by 31 7/8 inches and was painted in 1907.  It has an estimate of $250,000 to $250,000.  It sold for $337,500 including buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.  Of the 299 offered lots, 76 percent were sold.

Herbin  114

Lot 114, "Route de montagne en Corse," by Auguste Herbin, oil on canvas, 23 1/2 by 28 1/4 inches, 1907

Lot 114 is a very bold and strong oil on canvas by Auguste Herbin (1882-1960) entitled "Route de montagne en Corse."  It measures 23 1/2 by 28 1/4 inches and was painted in 1907.  It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It sold for $855,000.

Lot 121, "La Vallée de Lot," by André Derain, oil on canvas, 28 7/8 by 36 1/4 inches, 1912

Lot 121 is an good but atypical landscape by André Derain (1880-1954) entitled "La Vallée de Lot."  An oil on canvas, it measures 28 7/8 by 36 1/4 inches and was painted in 1912.  It has been consigned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  It has an estimate of $120,000 to $180,000. It sold for $187,500.


Gonzalez   126

Lot 126 is a delightful small still life by Eva Gonzales (1849-1883) entitled "Roses dans une verre."  An oil on canvas, it is 16 5/8 inches square and was painted in 1882.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.  It sold for $615,000.

Lot 101, "Le Village, Morgat," by Maxime Maufra, oil on canvas, 22 5/8 by 32 1/4 inches, 1901

Lot 101 is an excellent landscape oil on canvas by Maxime Maufra (1861-1918) entitled "Le Village, Morgat."  It measures 22 5/8 by 32 1/4 inches and was painted in 1901.  It has an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.  It sold for $43,750.

Lot 140, "Saint Michel," is an oil on canvas by Vlaminck that measures 28 by 35 1/4 inches and was painted in 1913.  It has an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.  It sold for $471,000.

The afternoon session of the Impresionist and Modern Art Day Auction at Sotheby's is highlighted by a fine sculptures by Matisse and Ernst, and good small paintings by Braque, Bonnard, and Ozenfant and some Latin American work including a good painting by Harrington.

Lot 317 is a fine plaster sculpture by Henri Matisse (1869-1954) entitled "Madeleine I."  It was created in 1903 and is 23 5/8 inches high.  It has an estimate of $800,000 to $1,200,000.  It sold for $675,000.

Lot 313 is an eerie but impressive bronze sculpture by Max Ernst (1891--1976).  It is 64 1/2 inches high and was conceived in 1925 and was executed in 1972.  It is entitled "Les Asperges de la lune" and has an estimate of $1,200,000 to $1,800,000.  It sold for $3,135,000.
