Turner

Lot 34, "The Chain Pier, Brighton," by Joseph Mallord William Turner, pencil, pen and black ink and watercolor with scratching out on Whitman paper, 5 3/4 by 8 3/4 inches

This January 26, 2012 auction of Old Master Drawings at Christie's New York has many superb drawings by such masters as Turner, Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, Simon Vouet, Guercino, Guardi and Edward Lear.

Loy 34, "The Chain Pier, Brighton," is a very strong pencil, pen and black ink and watercolor with scratching out on Whitman paper by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851),  It measures 5 3/4 by 8 3/4 inches.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.  It sold for $338,500 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The auction offered 147 lots of which 112 were sold, 76 percent, for $3,058,875.

Putti

Lot 82, "Putti and seraphim in flight," by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, pen and grey ink, brown and grey wash, 8 1/4 by 11 1/2 inches

Lot 82 is a great pen and brown ink brown and grey wash by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (1727-1804).  Entitled "Putti and serahim in flight," it measures 8 1/4 by 11 1/2 inches.  It has an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.  It sold for $22,500.


Cranach

Lot 90, "Portrait of a Lady," attributed to Lucas Cranach the Younger, bodycolor on vellum, 9 5/8 by 7 1/4 inches

One of the most beautiful lots in the auction is Lot 90, "Portrait of a Lady," that is attributed to Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515-1586).  A bodycolor on vellum, it measures 9 5/8 by 7 /14 inches.  At one point it was in the collection of Janos Scholz. It has a modest estimate of $50,000 to $60,000.  It sold for $104,500.

Blue lady

Lot 78, "Portrait of a God, bust-length, in a blue mantle," by Benedetto Luti, pastel, 16 3/4 13 5/8 inches

Lot 78 is a fine pastel of a "Portrait of a God, bust-length, in a blue mantle"  by Benedetto Luti.  It measures 16 3/4 by 13 5/8 inches.  It has an estimate of $30,000 to $40,000.  It failed to sell.

Lady

Lot 101, "A kneeling woman in a billowing mantle,"by Simon Vouet, black chalk with traces of white chalk, 10 by 6 7/8 inches

Lot 101 is a very lovely chalk drawing of a "kneelig woman in a billowing mantle" by Simon Vouet (1590-1649).  It measures 10 by 6 7/8 inches.  It has an estimate of $40,000 to $$60,000.  It sold for $64,900.

Guitar

Lot 65, "An Angel seated on a cloud playing the lute,"  by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, Il Guercino, red chalk, 11 3/8 by 8 inches

Lot 65 is a lovely red chalk drawing by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, Il Guercino (1591-1666).  Entitled "An Angel seated on a cloud playing the lute," it measures 11 3/8 by 8 inches.  It has an estimate of $35,000 to $45,000.  It sold for $37,500.

Three men

Lot 63, "Three Theatrical Figures," by Stefano Della Bella, black chalk, pen and brown ink, brown wash, 9 1/8 by 12 1/4 inches

Lot 63 is a wonderful drawing of "Three Theatrical Figures" by Stefano Della Bella (1610-1664).  The black chalk, pen and brown ink, brown wash drawing measures 9 1/8 by 12 1/4 inches.  It has a modest estimate of $12,000 to $18,000.  It failed to sell.

Lot 73, "Head of St. Joseph, in profile to the left," by Guercino, red chalk, 8 3/4 by 7 5/8 inches

Another Guercino is Lot 73, "Head of St. Joseph in profile to the left.  The red chalk drawing measures 8 3/4 by 7 5/8 inches.  It has an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.  It sold for $72,100.

Guercino

Lot 72, "Two Female Figures," by Guercino, pen and brown ink, 6 1/8 by 7 7/8 inches

Lot 72 is a very strong pen and brown ink drawing of two female figures by Guercino.  It measures 6 1/8 by 7 7/8 inches.  It has an estimate of $30,000 to $40,000.  It failed to sell.


Clouet2

Lot 99, "Portrait of King Charles IX," by Francois Clouet, black, white and red chalk, retouched by a later hand with bodycolor, on paper laid down on canvas, 13 1/4 by 9 inches

Lot 99 is a very fine drawing by Francois Clouet (circa 1515-1572) of a "Portrait of King Charles IX (1550-1574),  The black, white and red chaulk drawing was retouched by a later hand with bodycolor on paper laid down on canvas.  It measures 13 1/4 by 9 inches.  It has a modest estimate of $8,000 to $12,000.  It sold for $16,250.

Isabey

Lot 130, "A young woman standing on a rocky coastline staring out to sea, a ship in the distance," by Louis-Gabriel-Eugene Isabey, black chalk, pen and brown ink, watercolor, bodycolor, black ink framing lines, 8 1/4 by 6 3/4 inches

Lot 130, "A young woman standing on a rocky coastline staring out to sea, a ship in the distance," by Louis-Gabriel-Eugene Isabey 1803-1886), is a very lovely black chalk, pen and brown ink, watercolor, bodycolor, black ink framing lines.  It measures 8 1/4 by 6 3/4 inches.  It apparently is a scene from Walter Scott's "The Antiquary."  It has an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000.  It sold for $37,500.

Lot 84, "A Venetian capriccio, a palace with a grand staircase seen through an arch, a ruined domed anteroom on the left,"  by Francesco Guardi (1712-1793), black chalk, pen and brown ink, brown wash, 9 1/2 by 7 3/8 inches

Lot 84 is a very fine drawing by Francesco Guardi (1712-1793) of "A Venetian capriccio, a palace with a grand staircase seen though an arch, a ruined domed anteroom on the left."  The black chalk, pen and brown ink, brown wash measures 9 12 by 7 3/8 inches.  It has an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000.  It sold for $158,500.


Lear


Lot 22, "Montenegro," by Edward Lear, watercolor and bodycolor on paper laid down on a panel support, 30 by 48 inches

Lot 22 is a very large and impressive watercolor and bodycolor on paper laid down on a parnel support.  Entitled "Montenegro," it measures 30 by 48 inches.  It has an estimate of $120,000 to $180,000.  It sold for $422,500.


Lear3

Lot 30, "A Hilly Landscape with a shepherd and his flock and a seated figure gazing out towars the horizon," by John Martin, pencil and watercolor heightened with white, 11 by 27 1/4 inches

Lot 30 is a lovely and dramatic pencil and watercolor by John Martin (1789-1854) that is entitled "A Hilly Landscape with a shepherd and his flock and a seated figure gazing out towards the horizon."  It measures 11 by 27 1/4 inches.  It has an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.  It sold for $20,000.

Martin

Lot 28, "The Triumph of Mordecai," by John Martin, pencil and watercolor, 5 3/8 by 8 1/4 inches

Lot 28 is a very fine pencil and watercolor by John Martin (1789-1854) of "The Triumph of Mordecai."  It measures 5 /38 by 8 1/4 inches.  It depicts a scene from the Brook of Esther.  It has an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000.  It sold for $35,000.
