The Jaunary 30, 2013 Old Master Paintings auction at Christie's New York is highlighted by a beautiful pair of Roman scenes by Giovanni Paolo  Panini (1691-1765), a lovely painting by Francois Boucher, a strong work by Watteau, and a nice portrait by Sir Anthony Van Dyck.

The Paninis show view of the Campidoglio and Saint Peter's Square (Lots 41 and 42, respectively) and measure about 46 3/4 by 49 inches each and were executed in 1750.  They were once in the collection of Helen Hull, the former Mrs. Vincent Astor, of New York.  Lot 41 has an estimate of $3,000,000 to $5,000,000.  Lot 41 sold for $3,442,500 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.
 Lot 42 has an estimate of $2,000,000 to $3,000,000.  It sold for $2,098,500.

The catalogue entry notes that the paintings were "important vedute...originally installed...in the seat of the Holbech family, Farnborough Hall, Warwickshire (National Trust)."  The entry said that another Holbech Panini is now in a private collection in New York.


Boucher


Lot 22, "L'Amour moissonneur," by Francois Boucher, oil on canvas, 36 1/4 by 38 12 inches

Lot 22, "L'Amour moissonneur," is a charming oil on canvas by Francois Boucher (1703-1770).  It measures 36 1/4 by 38 1/2 inches and was once in the collection of Alfred de Rothschild of  Seamon Place, London.  It has a modest estimate of $300,000 to $400,000.  It sold for $386,500.

Watteau

Lot 37, "La Declaration,"by Antoine Watteau, oil on copper, 8 1/2 by 6 3/4 inches

Lot 37 is a very fine oil on copper by Antoine Watteau (1684-1721),  It measures 8 1/2 by 6 3/4 inches.  It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It sold for $602,500.


Chardin

Lot 38, "The Embroiderer," by Jean-Siméon Chardin, oil on canvas transferred from panel, 7 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches

Lot 38 is a lovely small painting by Jean-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779).  Entitled "The Embroiderer," it is an oil on canvas trasferred from panel that measures 7 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches.   It has an estimate of $3,000,000 to $4,000,000.  It sold for $4,002,500.

Grimmer

Lot 4, "Summer," by Jacob Grimmer, oil on panel, 17 3/8 by 24 1/4 inches

Lot 4 is a very pleasant work by Jacob Grimmer (1525/6-1590) entitled "Summer."  An oil on panel, it measures 17 3/8 by 24 1/4 inches.  It has an estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.  It sold for $326,500.

Ruysdael

Lot 18, "A Landscape with Peasants on a Dune," by Salomon Van Ruysdael, oil on panel, 15 7/8 by 22 3/4 inches, 1629

Lot 18 is an excellent small landscape by Salomon van Ruysdael of peasants on a dune.  An oil on panel, it measures 15 7/8 by 22 3/4 inches and is dagted 1629.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It sold for $482,500.

Van Dyck

Lot 17, "Portrait of a Cavalier," by Sir Anthony Van Dykck, oil on panel, 28 1/2 by 21 3/4 inches

Lot 17 is am excellent portrait of a cavalier by Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641).  An oil on panel, it measures 28 1/2 by 21 3/4 inches.  It was formerly in the collection of Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild (1836-1905), Vienna, and was confiscated during the German occupation and then returned to the heirs and then was at the Kimbell Art Foundation in Fort Worth,Texas. It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It sold for $542,500.  When it was offered at Sotheby's New York in January 2000, it had a conservative estimate of $150,000 to $200,000 and sold for $442,500.
