This auction of Old
Master Drawings at Christie's New York January 30, 2013 is highlighted
by a very fine work by Parmigianino, and excellent drawings by Tiepolo,
Boucher, Gainsborough, Ingres and Claude Lorrain.
Lot 71 is a superb "Head of a Bearded Man in Profile, facing west,
probably a self-portrait" by Girolamo Franceso Mazzola, Il Parmigianino
(1503-1540). A black chalk, pen and brown ink, it measures 6
1/2 by 4 3/4 inches. It was once in the collection of Thomas Howard,
the 2nd Earl of Arundel, and the Duke of Devonshire and the Trustees of
the Chatsworth Settlement and has been exhibited at the National
Gallery of Art in Washington, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London
and the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It
has a modest estimate of $300,000 to $500,000. It sold for $722,500
including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this
article.
Of
the 164 offered lots, 117, or 71 percent, sold for $16,544,625.
On
December 5, 2012, Sotheby's in London sold a drawing of "Head of a
Young Apostle" by Raphael for $47.8 million, the record for a drawing
sold at auction as well as a record for the artist.

auction record for a work on paper by the artist.

collection of Queen Christina of Sweden. It has an estimate
of $500,000 to $800,000. It
sold for $6,130,500, a world auction record for the artist.

failed to sell.
