Man's head

The January 29, 2014 auction of Old Master Drawings at Sotheby's New York is highlighted by several excelent works by Giovanni Domeniuco Tiepolo.

The finest drawing in the auction is Lot 20, "Head of a Shouting Man," by Florentine School, 17th Century.  The red-chalk drawing measures 11 1/8 by 7 1/8 inches.  The catalogue entry suggests that this work might by by Giovannida San Giovanni or Cecco Bravo.  Terrifically ferocious, it has a modest estimate of $15,000 to $20,000.  It sold for $40,625.


Tiepolo hats

Lot 38, "Punchinello collapses on the road," by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, pan and brown ink and two shades of brown wash over black chalk withbrown ink framing lines, 14 1/4 by 18 1/4 inches

Lot 38 is a great drawing by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (1727-1804) of "Punchinello collapses on the road."  It measures 14 1/4 by 18 1/4 inches and has been widely published and exhibited.  It is the frontispiece of the catalogue.  It is, according to the catalogue entry, one of 104 episodes "depicted in this endlessly inventive series of drawings, which though never bound, remained together and complete with a title page.., from the late 18th Century  until they were dispersed by Richard Owen in the 1920s."  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It sold for $695,000.  


Tiepolo gondola


Lot 39, "Incontro al molo: a 'codega' dhowing the way to a noble couple on a molo," by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, pen and brown ink and brown and gray wash over traces of black chalk, 1791, 11 3/8 by 16 7/16 inches

Lot 39 is a larger Tiepolo drawing entitled "Incontro al molo: a 'codega' showing the way to a noble couple on a molo."  It is the cover illustration of the auction's catalogue and measures 11 3/8 by 16 7/16.  It is dated 1791.  It was exhibited in 1974 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington and has been widely published.  According to the catalogue's entry "This magnificent and superbly preserved drawing is one of the finest Venetian drawings of any type to have appeared on the market in a generation.  A lantern-bearer, or codega, steps forward and has "sometime been interpreted as a satirical social comment, as the man's services cannot possiblity be needed in daytime.  The drawing is part of a series on The Contempory Scene by the artist.  It has an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.  It sold for $725,000, an auction record for the artist for a work on paper.

Lot 31, "God the Father in Glory," by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, pen and brown ink and two shades of brown wash over black chalk, 10 1/4 by 7 1/8 inches

Lot 31 is an exquisite drawing by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo entitled "God The Father in Glory."  It measures 10 1/4 by 7 1/8 inches and is part of  the artist's series of more than 100 variations on the theme of God the Father supported by Angels and Cherubs.  It has an estimate of $14,000 to $18,000.  It sold for $40,625.


Putti


Lot 68, "Putti Flying Amongst The Clouds," by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo pen and gay in and brown wash, 8 by 10 7/8 inches

Lot 68 is a fine drawing by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo entitled "Putti Flying Amongst The Clouds."  It measures 8 by 10 7/8 inches.  It has an estimate of $14,000 to $16,000.  It sold for $28,125.


Sleepy

Lot 85, "Rinaldo and Armida," by Francois Boucher, pen and brown ink and brown and red wash over black chalk with black ink framing lines, 8 by 12 3/8 inches

Lot 85 is a wonderful and excellent drawing by Francois Boucher (1703-1770) of "Rinaldo and Armida."  It measures 8 by 12 3/8 inches.  The subject comes from Torquato Tasso's epic poem Gerusalemme liberata that was popular both in painting and theater  The lot was an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.  It sold for $118,750.

Caracci

Lot 28, "St. Catherine of Alexandria," byAnnibale Carracci," pen and brown ink and gray wash squared in black chalk, 5 5/8 by 3 1/2 inches

Lot 28 is a very lyrical and beautiful small drawing by Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) of St. Catherine of Alexandria.  It measures 5 5/8 by 3 1/2 inches.  It once was in the collection of Sir Peter Lely.  There are other versions in the collection at Windsor Castle.  It has an estimate of $30,000 to 440,000.  It sold for $37,500.

Black hat

Lot 125, "Portrait of a Young Man in a Beret, possibly a self-portrait," French School, 19th Century, black chalk and gray and black wash, 19 1/4 by 15 1/4 inches

Lot 125 is a very striking "Portrait of a Young Man in a Beret, possibly a self-portrait."  It is ascribed to French School, 19th Century and it measures 19 1/4 by 15 1/4 inches.  It has an estimate of $15,000 to $20,000.  It sold for $37,500.

Baby

Lot 26, "A seated putto holding a flower," by Il Guercino, red chalk, 7 1/4 by 5 1/2 inches

Lot 26 is a charming and very fine red chalk drawing by Il Guercino (1591-1666) of "a seated putto holding a flower."  It measures 7 1/4 by 5 1/2 inches.  It has an estimate of $30,000 to $40,000.  It sold for $37,500.
