The January 19, 2017 auction at Christie's New York of Americana from the impressive Jay P. Altmayer Collection at Palmetto Hall in Mobile, Alabama, is highlighted by a nice group of American paintings including works by Martin J. Heade, Thomas Hill, William Louis Sonntag, Richard Clague,
Herman Herzog, Joseph Rusling Meeker, James Wells Champney, Xanthus Russell Smith, and James Macdougal Hart, and many fine examples of American furniture.

Lot 51 is a good oil on board of a "Red Rose in a Standing Vase" by Martin J. Heade (1819-1904).  It measures 16 by 8 inches and was painted in 1883.  It was once with Berry-Hill Galleries and has been published twice by Theodore E. Stebbins Jr.  It has an estimate of $50,000 to $70,000.  It sold for $50,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The sale total was $5,364,624 with about 93 percent of the 225 offered lots selling.

Thomas Hill

Lot 36, "Crater Lake, Tacoma, Washington," by Thomas Hill, oil on canvas, 32 1/4 by 48 3/4 inches

Lot 36 is an excellent oil on canvas by Thomas Hill (1829-1908) of "Crater Lake, Tacoma, Washington."  It measures 32 1/4 by 48 3/4 inches.  It has an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000.  It sold for $43,750.

Sonntag

Lot 35, "Evening on the Susquehanna," by William Louis Sonntag, oil on canvas, 36 by 56 inches

Lot 35 is a fine landscape by William Louis Sonntag (1822-1900) entitled "Evening on the Susquehanna."  An oil on canvas, it measures 36 by 56 inches.  It has a modest estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.  It sold for $18,750.

Clague

Lot 20, "North Shore of Lake Pontchatrain at Mandeville," by Richard Clague, oil on canvas, 36 1/8 by 60 1/4 inches

Lot 20 is a large, very dramatic and very impressive oil on canvas by Richard Clague (1821-1873) that is entitled "North Shore of Lake Pontchatrain at Mandeville."  It measures 36 1/8 by 60 1/4 inches.  It hung at the entrance to the Oval Office  at the White House during the administration of Jimmy Carter from 1977-1981  It has an estimate of $120,000 to $180,000.  It sold for $1,627,500!

Herzog

Lot 21, "Southern Hardwood Swamp Scene," by Herman Herzog, oil on canvas, 22 by 26 inches

Lot 21 is an excellent oil on canvas by Herman Herzog (1831-1932) entitled "Southern Hardwood Swamp Scene."  It measures 22 by 26 inches.  It was included as "Old Granny at Negro Settlement (Florida)" in the 1972 exhibition on the artist at the Phoenix-Chase Galleries.  It was once with Kennedy Galleries in New York.  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $487,500!

Meeker

Lot 37, "Near Bayou Lafourche," by Joseph Rusling Meeker, oil on canvas, 24 by 20 inches, 1882

Lot 37 is an exellent oil on canvas by Joseph Rusling Meeker (1827-1889) entitled "Near Bayou Lafourche."  It measures 24 by 20 inches and was painted in 1882,  It was once with Hirschl & Adler in New York.  It has an estimate of $25,000 to $35,000.  It sold for $68,750.

Lot 33, "Kentucky Landscape," by Joseph Rusling Meeker, oil on canvas, 34 1/4 by 50 inches, 1858

Lot 33 is a large oil on canvas of "Kentucky Landscape" by Joseph Rusling Meeker.  It measures 34 1/4 by 50 inches and was painted in 1858.  It has a modest estimate of $12,000 to $18,000.  It sold for $16,750.

James Wells Champney

Lot 200, "Little Daughter Dorothy," by James Wells Champney, oil on canvas 72 1/2 by 36 inches

Lot 200 is a very good oil on canvas of "Little Daughter Dorothy" by James Wells Champney (1843-1903).  It measures 72 1./2 by 36 inches and was "possibly" exhibited in the 1880s at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.  It has a modest estimate of $10,000 to $15,000.  It was passed.

Leutze

Lot 182, "Harbor, New London," by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze, oil on canvas, 23 by 40 inches

Lot 182 is a nice oil on canvas by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze (1816-1868) entitled "Harbor, New London."  It measures 23 by 40 inches.  It has an estimate of $5,000 to $7,000. It sold for $11,250.

Xanthus Smith

Lot 186, "C.S.S. Manassas and U.S.S. Hartford in New Orleans harbor," by Xanthus Russell Smith, oil on board, 5 1/4 by 9 1/2 inches

One of the auction's best paintings is Lot 186, "C.S.S. Manassas and U.S.S, Hartford in New Orleans harbor," by Xanthus Russell Smith (1838-1929).  An oil on board, it measures 5 1/4 by 9 1/2 inches.  It has an estimate of $6,000 to $8,000.  It sold for $27,500.

Lot 183, "New Ironsides at the Philadelphia Navy Yard," by Xanthus Russell Smith, oil on canvas, 7 1/2 by 11 inches

Lot 183 is a good little oil on canvas by Xanthus Smith entitled "New Ironsides at the Philadelphia Navy Yard."  It measures 7 1/2 by 11 inches.  It has an estimate of $6,000 to $8,000. It sold for $13,750.

Sully

Lot 49 is a beautiful "Portrait of a Woman, presumably Elizabeth Sully," by Thomas Sully (1783-1872).  An oil on canvas, it measures 18 by 15 inches and was painted in 1828.  It has an estimate of $5,000 to $10,000.  It sold for $21,250.

Shegogue

Lot 47, "The Zouave Que Vive," by James Hamilton Shegogue, oil on canvas, 35 1/2  by 38 1/2 inches, 1860

Lot 47 is a large and impressive oil on canvas by James Hamilton Shegogue (1806-1872) entitled "The Zouave Que Vive."  It measures 35 1/2 by 38 1/2 inches.  It was painted in 1860.  It has an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000.  It sold for $40,000.

Hart

Lot 222, "Pastorial scene," by James Macdougal Hart, oil on canvas, 9 1/2 by 15 inches

Lot 222 is a nice pastoral scence with cows and two church steeples by James Macdougal Hart (1828-1901) who with his brother William were members of the Hudson River School of Painting.  The work is an oil on canvas that measures 9 1/2 by 15 inches.  It was once with Kenedy Galleries.  It has an estimate of $1,500 to $2,000.  I bid $2,000.  It sold for $4,370.

Lot 27 is a hefty and impressive pair of William IV plum-pudding mahogany Shepherd's Crook armchairs, circa 1830.  It has an estimate of $7,000 to $10,000.  It sold for $10,000.

Lot 64 is a Louis Phillippe ormolu surtout de table that is 79 inches long and circa 1840.  It has an estimate of $15,000 to $25,000.  It sold for $12,500. Lot 69, the set of 12 dining chairs has an estimate of $3,000 to $5,000.  It sold for $8,125.  The dining table has an estimate of $7,000 to $10,000.  It sold for $8,125.

Cabinet

Lot 171 is a very impressive George II mahogany bookcase cabinet, circa 1750.  It is 74 inches high and has a dolphin naiant crest.  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $100,000.  It sold for $56,250.
