This
March 6, 2019 of
American Paintings at Sotheby's New York includes some good works by
William Merritt Chase, Worthington Whittredge, William Wendt, Henry
Ossawa Tanner, James
Hamilton, George L. K. Morris, George Luks, John Twachtman, and Dwight
Tryon.
Lot 119 is a very fine oil and canvas sketch of a mother and child by
William Merritt Chase (1849-1916). It measures 22 by 15 inches
and painted circa 1915. It was once at Berry Hill Galleries and
is illustrated in Ronald G. Pisano's 2006 catalogue on the
artist. It has a modest estimate of $80,000 to $120,000. It failed to sell.
The auction total was $3,335,875
including the buyer's premiums. About 62 of the 138 offered lots
did not sell.

Lot 54, "Sunrise," by Dwight Tryon, oil on panel, 22 by 18 inches, 1916
The
most beautiful and poetic painting in the auction is Lot 54, "Sunrise,"
by Dwight Tryon (1849-1925). It measures 22 by 18 inches and was
painted in 1916. It has a very modest estimate of $6,000 to
$8,000. It sold for $20,000.

Lot 120, "Spring," by John Henry Twachtman, oil on canvas, 30 by 25
inches
Lot
120 is a lovely oil on canvas by John Henry Twachtman (1853-1902)
entitled "Spring." It was once owned by Kennedy Galleries and
probably exhibited at Durand-Ruel Galleries in New York in "First
Exhibition: Ten American Painters" in 1898. It was included in
the Spanierman Gallery 2006 exhibition on the artist. It has an
estimate of $60,000 to $80,000. It sold for $68,750.

canvas, 30 inches square
Lot 45 is a lovely oil on canvas of "A Mid-Summer Night, Cambridge," by
Edward Henry Potthast (1857-1927), It is 30 inches square and is
being sold to benefit the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It was
included in the exhibition on the artist at the Chappelier Gallery in
New York in 1969 and was once owned by Mrs. Catherine Auchincloss of
New York. It has a modest estimate of $40,000 to $60,000. It sold for $12,500.

Homestead, Newport, R.I.," by Worthington Whittredge, oil on canvas, 35
3/8 by 55 1/2 inches, circa 1872
Lot 104
is as large landscape scene of "The Old Homestead, Newport, R.I.," by
Worthington Whittedge (1820-1910). An oil on canvas, it measures
35 3/8 by 55 1/2 inches and was painted circa 1872. It was once owned
by Kennedy Galleries and was illustrated in Anthony F. Janson's 1989
book on the artist. It has an estimate of $120,000 to
$180,000. It failed to sell.
